Gore gets Noble peace prize for film etc.

Does anyone know if there was ever a nobel prize winner for peace who deserved the prize?

Several, IMO

2006 - Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Bank
1999 - Médecins Sans Frontières
1997 - International Campaign to Ban Landmines
1993 - Nelson Mandela
1991 - Aung San Suu Kyi
1985 - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
1984 - Desmond Tutu

2006 - Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Bank - dunno him
1999 - Médecins Sans Frontières - she sounds french...
1997 - International Campaign to Ban Landmines - must be royalty or something with such a long name
1993 - Nelson Mandela - YAY NELSON MANDELA!!!
1991 - Aung San Suu Kyi ???
1985 - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Physicians??? This one must have been a joke.
1984 - Desmond Tutu YAY TUTU!

2006 - Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Bank - dunno him

He started the micro credit financing that is being used in all low income groups in Asia, Africa and Latin America

1999 - Médecins Sans Frontières - she sounds french...

aka Doctors without Borders; international group of physicians who work in conflict ridden areas

1997 - International Campaign to Ban Landmines - must be royalty or something with such a long name

They helped to ban the landmines that were buried in conflict ridden areas: unfortunately they have been replaced by cluster bombs

1991 - Aung San Suu Kyi ???

She's the one trying to get rid of the military junta in Burma.
Has been under house arrest for decades, I think; they threw her in prison during this months uprising there

1985 - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Physicians??? This one must have been a joke.

Well the scientists were sleeping on the job at the time :D

Did he or the organization actually bring peace?

And I've read that the same loans are now being used as a form of coercion and power over the debtors -- sometimes taking homes and farms -- because the people aren't attorneys and can't read the "fine print".

1999 - Médecins Sans Frontières - she sounds french...

aka Doctors without Borders; international group of physicians who work in conflict ridden areas

Did they bring peace to anywhere?

1997 - International Campaign to Ban Landmines - must be royalty or something with such a long name

They helped to ban the landmines that were buried in conflict ridden areas: unfortunately they have been replaced by cluster bombs

Did it work? Did it bring peace to anywhere?

1991 - Aung San Suu Kyi ???

She's the one trying to get rid of the military junta in Burma.
Has been under house arrest for decades, I think; they threw her in prison during this months uprising there

And did she bring peace to the nation?

And by the way, she wasn't thrown into prison. She was under house arrest before the incidents, and she was under house arrest when the UN envoy went to meet with her. No prison, Sam, sorry to dash your spin!

The Nobel Peace prize is actually a big fuckin' joke. For one thing, there's no peace anywhere, and hasn't been for decades if not longer.

I think the people who benefitted from the actions of these people/organisations would disagree. I would give details but I know you hate reading long posts.

It was reported that she had been moved the following day to Insein Prison (where she had been detained in 2003)[43] [44][45][46], but meetings with UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari near her Rangoon home on 30 September and 2 October established that she remained under house arrest[

Thanks for that news.:)

And what percentage of the world's population would that be, Sam? And since I already know it's so small as to be miniscule, how could that possibly qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize?

Al Gore makes a biased movie, not unlike something that fat man makes, and makes a few propaganda speeches, and he's awarded the peace prize?

Yazar Arafat killls a few Israelis, yells a lot about a "homeland", and he gets awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?

So, what ....next year they'll award the prize to Blackwater Security for protecting some diplomat?

Or perhaps they'll aware it to the Burma Military government for being lenient to the protestors by not shooting more of them?

Isn't the "peace" prize supposed to be about bringing peace???? Where did they suddenly go so wrong?

Perhaps its about recognising the persons desire and intent to devote their lives to the effort. Wouldn't you say its something that deserves recognition, if only to focus attention to what they are trying to accomplish and perhaps add to their endeavor?

wow...there is at least one scientist that is a nobel peace prize laureate.

http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1962/

Linus Carl Pauling.

Apparently he defended the unpatriotic terrorist idea that nuclear weapons are bad.

In the harsh political atmosphere then prevailing, it was not surprising that Linus Pauling gradually became isolated and ostracized, primarily on suspicion of being a Communist.

He had also gotten a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1954.

No! And I think that's the point ...is the Nobel Prize supposed to be just for people who talk a lot about something? ...but never accomplish anything?

Hell, if that was the case Tiassa and Fraggle would get the Nobel Peace prize every single year! Billy T might even be awarded the prize on odd years.

Talk, talk, talk, ....make a biased movie, talk some more .....get the Nobel Peace prize!!! Wow, what a deal.

Yes, wars, open and hidden, still exist.

BTW, Do you know that Alfred Nobel was greatly critizised when alive? He made his fortune by discovering that the very unstable nitroglycerine, if used to saturate fine sawdust, could be safely handled, even by idiots, who included in their number many anarchists. (Probaby some of your ancestors, judging from your generally anarchistic, anti-social, views.) The press of his day held him responsible for the great up surge in acts of violence dynamite made possible.

Nobel's reply to them is interesting: He said he had no regrets about bring dynamite to the world, his only regret was that it was not more powerful. That if a really powerful agent (He was thinking chemical, did not know about nuclear energy) could be invented it would be too powerful to be used in war and crimes etc. That has turned out to be true, as far as history since US use of A-bomb on Japan twice in WWII. The really powerful "agent" dream of Nobel, the H-bomb has never been used in anger.

But to return to your post /point and the thread:

I assume from your POV, the Nobel for peace should only be given to one who actually achieves universal and lasting peace. I have always wanted that prize, so now that I understand (thanks to you) what is sure to win it, I will return to my laboratory and get right to work, using my newly learned knowledge about genetics (and the internet when needing some details, I do not yet know). As I trust you, I will tell you (but do not tell others who, unlike you, might try to stop me). What I have done:

(I have almost got it perfected.) It is a form of "artificial life", part nano-tech and part genetic enginering so it can replicate its self. The major "secretion" it makes is a toxic, rapidly-mutating, viral agent. MY new nano-partical life form is genetically engineered and with fundamental bio-chemistry different from all existing life forms. - E.g. no DNA, RNA etc. Its essential replication information is stored using the "gigantic magneto-resistive" effect - same as used in ipod to compactly store huge quantity of information.

The toxic, rapidly-mutating, viral agents this genetically enginereed new form of life releases, each time it sub divides (sort of a mitoses) number between 64 and 128. They will soon kill all forms of convention life on Earth, not just mankind, even those rams batting heads to impress females and even the tiny amobeas, etc.

I will die along with everyone else, but I am old and do not expect to live for ever, but please nominate me for the Nobel peace prize now, as I will bring true and lasting peace to the entire world.

Thus, only I qualify for the prize, I am sure you agree.

Consider yourself nominated, Billy, but ONLY if you can actually accomplish your mission. Please proceed with your mission, and good luck!

Like him or not (I don't), Arafat did help bring Israel and the Palestinians closer to a peace agreement than they had ever been.
Yeah, after he helped whip things into a violent frenzy of terrorism and reprisal killings. He was a large part of the reason they needed to have peace negations in the first place.

I think we have to watch out for global cooling to:
"It is a cold fact: the Global Cooling presents humankind with the most important social, political, and adaptive challenge we have had to deal with for ten thousand years. Your stake in the decisions we make concerning it is of ultimate importance; the survival of ourselves, our children, our species" - Lowell Ponte (1976)

There might be another ice age soon...

No, we should simply learn to live with it. I mean, nothing we can do to stop it for centuries, and by that time, we might invent a giant vacuum cleaner to clean up the atomsphere, for god's sake!!!

Global warming is here to stay for a while .....live with it ..'cause there ain't nothin' you can do to stop it.

Baron Max

thats the kind of attitude that allowed it to happen in the first place

Yeah, but I think Noak probably misunderstood the orders to save the animals, and he and his family climbed on by mistake!! And thus save the human race, and thus fucked up the whole world.

Baron Max

thats the first intelligent thing you have said in this thread

Sorry Baron -I did not see your post 20 until pjdude1219 just responded to it, but gives me an idea for a joint peace-prize ceremony.

While you are nominating me for the peace prize based on my nano/genetic hybrid new life form (No DNA or RNA etc) that releases many toxic rapidly mutating viruses that will eradicate all conventional life forms, finally establishing ever lasting peace on Earth. (More detail in post 51.)

I think you should also nominate Noah for the igNoble peace prize. For his ark building efforts, which saved that trouble making "intelligent bipod” (the featherless one, not the smarter egg layer, who has never started a war or kill anyone, except a few ants.)

Dr William Gray reacts to Gore's prize:
ONE of the world's foremost meteorologists has called the theory that helped Al Gore share the Nobel Peace Prize "ridiculous" and the product of "people who don't understand how the atmosphere works".

Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, told a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina that humans were not responsible for the warming of the earth.

"We're brainwashing our children," said Dr Gray, 78, a long-time professor at Colorado State University. "They're going to the Gore movie [An Inconvenient Truth] and being fed all this. It's ridiculous."

Dr Gray, whose annual forecasts of the number of tropical storms and hurricanes are widely publicised, said a natural cycle of ocean water temperatures - related to the amount of salt in ocean water - was responsible for the global warming that he acknowledges has taken place.

However, he said, that same cycle meant a period of cooling would begin soon and last for several years.

"We'll look back on all of this in 10 or 15 years and realise how foolish it was," Dr Gray said.

During his speech to a crowd of about 300 that included meteorology students and a host of professional meteorologists, Dr Gray also said those who had linked global warming to the increased number of hurricanes in recent years were in error.

He cited statistics showing there were 101 hurricanes from 1900 to 1949, in a period of cooler global temperatures, compared to 83 from 1957 to 2006 when the earth warmed.

"The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major effect on global temperatures," Dr Gray said. http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/gore-gets-a-cold-shoulder/2007/10/13/1191696238792.html

Not that I really care what Mr Gore gets an award for but how come he is getting an award for something that everybody already knows, everybody except for the probably the illiterate native Fishermen in Tanzania. I mean, I thought peace price was for exceptional work and innovative achievement. Has Gore finally found a way to stop global warming? No, so why are we giving him the half million dollar winner price. This really bothers me, since we are giving away peace price, why don't they give it to President W. Bush for his relentless pursuit of democracy in the Middle East. I guess G.W just hasn't worked hard enough, the thousands of military men and women and sleepless nights over which MiddleEastern chief is plotting to kill another isn't impressive enough. Like I said, this baffles me.

Gore is sharing the prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Gore's acheivement has been popularizing the subject. His film outlines the problem and the solution.

In contrast, GWB launched a pre-emptive war based on lies, with no plan to exit, leading to the deaths of over 100K Iraqis and over 3,000 Americans, all in the pursuit of a commodity that is unsustainable, the use of which is destroying the planet.
