Difficulties with signing in

Downdetector site showed no unusual outtages over the past couple days. Funny there'd be three science sites all having downtime. I think they're all on different host servers, too.

This might relate to some kind of software update from some major company. Could be the update is pickier about lapsed SSL certificates and so a bunch of older sites got swept up in that.

Also, worth noting....the global regulation on SSL, TSL and DN validation changed in March, so that it now lapses after 200 days, instead of the previous 398. (yeah, I don't know how they pick these numbers, either). And those are maximum possible lifetimes, not necessarily what might be set with individual browsers or whatever. And I think they're going to keep shortening those lifetimes, so at some point, hosts/developers will have to offer some kind of automated renewal for site owners.

It's all bullshit, so far as online forums are concerned, since we aren't e-commerce or banking sites where there is personal info in play.

It has a lot of its subforums reserved to Christians (or "believers" perhaps) but there is a physics section (and some others) where anyone can post.

Apparently it was one of the posters in that site who invented and gave their name to the description of a post or a statement where no matter how tongue in cheek or sarcastic it was , it could always be taken seriously(the name of it escapes me for now)

Edit: It is Poe's Law.(Searching is so easy now.I just copied that last paragraph into the search box and it jogged my memory no trouble at all.
 
Net "seems" to still be down. Is the same ownership involved? Unlike SF, there may be no "ex-pat" that can intervene and renew the certificate over there.

I seem to recall that on at least one previous occasion the site was taken down to rid it of swarms of bots. We read articles these days about second hand bookstores despatching huge orders of random works to obscure warehoues, for scanning into AI databases. I wonder if selected science websites are getting similar treatment. It will probably resurface in a day or two.

Huh, Dot Net still down. Hope it is a goose. Hetzner Online GmbH is not friendly if you inquire what's going on. Their attitude seems to be only the site owner matters. Odd, given that online forums exist because of us, the members. Hetzner provides a service that extends to us, not just Blike. I filled out their feedback form, registering my annoyance that the staff I reached acted like the answer to the question "Why is SFN down and how soon might it come back?" was a state secret. I don't recall requesting any personal or proprietary information, just the basic stuff they should be somewhat accountable for. To us, who use the site. Which they are supposed to host and, they claim, in a highly reliable way.

Posted something about it at Stryder's. But like defunct "The Science Forum" or whatever it was called, I doubt that he has any interest in or reach at that one. Whereas he was once a mod or tech guy or something here.

Oh, yeah, I see he last posted here October 2022, re Liz Truss and the head of lettuce PMship. And not regularly since 2016. Having been a mod or tech guy meself, elsewhere, I know how limited our reach is. Even if I can sling the jargon, it got me nowhere with Hetzner.

Just looked in at the village. Ha, MR is still prolific as ever. I really need to look in more over there.

Dot Net is now six days down. Started Sunday iirc.

Long enough to justify deep concern, along with the aloofness of Hetzner. Even when SV was plagued by excessive bots, it was only overwhelmed in hours-long spasms, and not consistently for everybody. And I don't think SF-com has ever been off an entire week, but my memory isn't the greatest (it took mere months for me to completely forget about the existing SF dot net thread).

The wild-west, not everybody's cup of tea. MR can post about his UFOs and anomalies, there's freedom like that. But not without MR and "Mister Ubiquitously Confrontational" getting into one donnybrook after another across a spectrum of subject areas. Can two foes subconsciously value each other (subliminal "love" is too strong a word!) for the maintenance of evolutionary fitness -- or in this case, argumentative fitness? SF once seemed to sport several classic rivalries, but they have long since gone extinct via permanent banning. Now left to the occasional drifting crank eccentric passing through to stimulate an activity surge. ;)
