City Design Efficiency Thread

The Venus Project was probably the reason you started doing what you're doing! :D
No this is the first time I actually saw anything about Venus Project. Back this past summer, I flew around an area in SL that I think might have been the Venus Project. They did have all these apartments and some sort of central dome on their island. There are also a few other really good city design islands on SL.

I actually started this project back years ago in the 90s when I was still in school. It's pretty amazing to find sites that have similar ideas to principals I've been talking about for awhile here. Not just princiapals about city deisgn, but about cultural misconceptions about pursuing the ideal for all. If I wasn't struggling, I'd be able to do much more. I love using ACad and 3D modeling. I have lots of very big designs that need to get off the ground.

Environmentally-friendly sustainability.
Most people seem to think innovation and technology makes for a prosperous city, and prosperous cities are harmful to the environment. Double speak propaganda of course. It is actually common standard that a prosperous civilization implies damage to environment.

I know. I saw the infomercials. I never knew it existed until just recently. To think people were actually doing these things so long ago. I'd like to input that type of detail into my designs. I often use AutoCad to create the structures, but don't know much about actual technologies such as energy, communications, and sewer systems. I know nothing about materials. Most of my understanding is about ethics, social system processes, and organizational design.

Well some were on a computer that got stolen. I still have ACad files on my hard drive, but not finished.

What is this ...two dreamers have found each other? Geez, I'm sooooooo happy for you two ...now the dreamworlds can just flow out all over sciforums, huh? :D

Realism is not a dream, it is realistic. What you are claiming is a disillusioned hallucigenated induced dream.

Lix why are you even replying to that troll. In a real forum, he would be banned for just being an idiot. But here, he's a useful idiot. :)

No trolling is anything that is addressed at a person instead of to the topic. Either you discuss the topic or not. Discussion is about validity of ideas. Not invalidation of others.

I addressed your topic ...I said that it was and is nothing but a pipedream with little or no connection to the realities of the world. Yours is simply one of many "IF" fairy tales ........" "IF" all men loved each other, we'd have no wars" Well, golly, sure that statement is true, ....but it has no connection to how humans really are or how they really think or act.

"IF" the fox hadn't stopped to take a shit, he'd have caught the rabbit.

Shit in one hand, wish/dream in the other and see which one fills up first.

But there's no reason it has to continue that way. Up until very recently people weren't even conscious of what we call "the environment" and they certainly didn't know they had a relationship with it. One of the things we've gotten from all that "innovation and technology" is the ability to understand that we're components of an ecosystem.

Another is post-industrial technology that can vastly decrease our adverse impact on the environment. Telecommuting alone (something I'd wager 95% of us here on SciForums could do if our managers would simply let us) would cut back on fossil fuel consumption, shrink urban sprawl, reduce the demand for processed food, and generally make people less stressed out so they could make wiser choices.

One of the most environmentally disastrous civilizations in all of history was one of the least technologically advanced: the Maya, the only cities that were built without draft animals. They cut down all the trees in a increasingly larger radius and then wondered why the climate changed and there was a food shortage.

I have yet to see anywhere that I made a claim of IF in order for all my facts to be legitimate.

Technology is just as important as a healthy Earth. Humans should not be destroying Earth. There is no practical reason for it. Everything I am discussing is about practicality and efficiency. Human destructive acts on the planet are impractical and inefficient means of attaining civilizations one and only goal. To nurture the individual and the environment. In fact, destroying the environment goes completely against the purpose of civilization.

The problem is that civilizations arise over the decades without purpose or method. Civilizatioons operate like cancer effectively destroying the individual and the environment. When the purpose is clear (nurture individual and environemnt), the methods revolve around that. Civilization can function with utmost efficiency according to that.

Which brings us back to your "IF" statements ....that you wish to completely change everything in, say New York City, so as to make life better. How are you going to change NYC without destroying what's already there and rebuilding it to your specifications?

See? You don't address that at all ....you simply say things like "IF NYC were better designed, then....."

It's just more "IF" statements that have no basis in fact or logic ...nor does it deal with the realities of life as it is.

Baron Max

I never stated anything about "If NYC were better designed" Again, where are you getting this? I never stated it or implied it. NYC DOES NOT have to be better designed in order to be redesigned. I never even mentioned at all redesigning a single city anywhere. WTF are you talking about?

There is a huge difference between me talking about designing cities, and you implying that I am talking about redesigning anything. Sure in a sense, it is redesigning, but that has nothing to do with it. Either way, still waiting for a solution.

You seem to have absolutely no clue about the realities of life as it is.

Two quick up-dates on post 24 (my city plan):

1) Hertz CEO just announced on TV that in London, NYC and Paris, Hertz will soon have many parking areas for cars rented by the hour. (~$6/ hour). You get OKed for membership in the car "renter's club," your coded key card, etc. - not nearly as advanced my 2D "horizontal elevator" with computer driving you to your destination in electric powered "autovehics" that never stop in route as there are no at grade intersections in my transport grid. (It has controlled access, like an elevator shaft, so not possible to hit a dog etc.) But at least Hertz has the sharing of vehicle cost among many instead of private single owner’s cars and much higher cost with traffic jams wasting both fuel and time. There will still be accidents also, until my plan is adopted. (Vehicle safety is measured by accidents/ or deaths per passenger mile. Few know it but the elevator is at least 100 times safer than other forms of transport.)

2) In post 24 I failed to make it clear that the transport grid and "block building" sides are approximately at 45 degrees to North/South so all sides receive some direct sunlight. Likewise it was not clear that the floor area of each level decreases to avoid mutual shadowing. (Truncated pyramid shaped buildings.) I.e. on every level there is a perimeter garden, so from high above the city, it looks like a forest or field of flowers and/or vegetable gardens with roughly rectangular transport gird cutting thru it. Why the city is literally green as well as environmentally green.

In keeping with FR's desire for "telecommuting" I noted that all block buildings are "cable wired" for the internet and TV (no ghost images from building reflections) but now want to point out that many will commute by elevator* and possibly a short walk or bike ride via the separate and covered (no rain) bike and walking girds. (Roof of the bike grid is floor of the walking grid.) I.e. 100% of commuting is fuel free. Trucks use advanced batteries and buses use flywheels. Why city is “fume free.”

If you have not read post 24, I encourage you to as a very green, fume-free, low-energy-use city with much cheaper, safer and faster transport is possible. The key to all this is the elimination of at grade intersections so the Autovehics never stop prior to your destination, which is always a center of block terminal and under computer control autovehics can travel close spaced at much higher than current average urban speeds.

*I think it is part of human nature to want direct contact, both at work and in play, not isolation in some “computer cubical”, even if it is at home. This is very dramatically seen in Sao Paulo’s bars, which overflow onto the sidewalks with tables and chairs. Often the side walk in front of one is so crowded with people seated and standing, talking, drinking, flirting, etc, that it is hard to pass yet the bar immediately next door is essentially empty. The very fact that bars exist also proves this – you can drink your beer etc at home much cheaper. I.e. “elevator commuting” is much more desirable than “telecommuting.”
