It's happening! They're making a miniseries for the scifi channel, finally finally finally! I guess they decided to skip Dune Messiah (it was kind of boring, like Herbert kinda got lost in his own universe) and get to one of the better, cooler books in the series. Pictures of the entire cast here. I recognize some faces from the last miniseries (Dune) which I watched just a week ago, like Paul Atreides, Princess Irulan, Gurney Halleck, and Chani. What shocked me so far was the presence of Alice Krige as the Lady Jessica instead of that other 'chick,' who I thought did a bang-up job. Leto II looks older than I pictured him (I thought he was a child?) but he does have a resemblance to the guy who plays Paul.

Damn I'm excited. If anyone can find a release date here then please, please tell me. I really enjoyed the last one and...and...I just have to see this one. YES!!
 
Maybe they didn't want to risk getting a shitty child actor (like the girl that played Alia in the last miniseries). I can't wait to see what he looks like as a worm...yes yes that will be cool in my book.
 
Yeah. I don't get cable, as I only usually watch public, but they put it out on vhs. I rented it. Pretty good, but I didn't like some of the interpretations.:(

Isn't Paul dead in this one?

Hasn't he got new kids?
 
I don't want to get into a debate about this...but I was a lil disappointed in the dune mini-series. Maybe lynch's visuals spoiled it i dunno. Still worth the viewing though.
I never made it to children of dune. I couldn't get past the boredom of messiah. I just kept reading the first over and over heh.
 
Captain it's really worth it. Messiah is incredibly boring but Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, and Heretics of Dune are really incredible. All of the characters are nothing but conniving people of power vying to control either bloodlines or the planet itself. At one point in Heretics a Bene Gesserit named Taraza meets with one of the Tlielaxu named Waff. She remarks what strange names they have.
 
Maybe I will pick them back up...starting with the first of course ;) (Dune is still on top 5 best fiction all time for me)
 
Tackle Messiah! Tackle it first! Get it over with!

I've been reading the Dune series since the middle of the eigth grade, it's kind of like a past time for me now.
 
I read the whole series last year. My mom got me the first one, and immedieately afterwards I ordered the rest.:D

So they decided a 20-something shitty actor was better.

The acting was ridiculous in the last mini-series. And the plot was so washed-out that it put the books to shame.
 
We all have our opinions I guess. The miniseries wasn't perfect but it easily garnered a score of 'good' in my book.

The cons-
  • Harkonnen soldiers looked too much like stormtroopers
  • No location filming, the desert didn't look as real as it could have
  • The Reverend Mother and Alia were not very good actors
  • Irulan wears a dress with butterflies on it. Butterflies in the year 10910ish

The pros (which, in my opinion, outweigh the cons)

  • The guy who played Paul did an excellent job of showing the metamorphosis from boy to man
  • Top-notch special effects
  • For me, just overall coolness
 
Alec Newman or something. He was good.

It would need a little more action to appeal to the masses and me
 
I thought most of the visuals were pretty good. And WAY better than the movie version. But I'll reiterate, I think the story was weak in the miniseries.

And yes, it was in the acting. The actor who played Paul (besides being OLD) made him out to be the whiniest living being ever to walk the earth. Paul was dignified in the book, child or not. Jessica's part was greatly diminished and the bene gesserit as a whole were SO mystical. They're foundation was really pretty logical as I recall. And well, blah-di-blah-di-blah. I won't go through the whole cast.

I remember being happy with Dr. whats-his-face, the freman. Some of the supporting cast too. But the main characters sucked ass.

As the movie progressed I don't think he was as whiny. That was the point:D

Yes, Dr. Kynes was probably the coolest guy in the movie (aka Liet). Or one of the coolest. He was killed in mid-sentence, as I recall, telling shai-hulud or something that he was 'not dead yet.' He claimed he was a god and then he died. Perfect way to go I think.
 
Bah! Coming-of-age mumbo-jumbo. Paul was fricking rad in the book the whole way through. If anything, I saw him as naive not whinny. And I think the actor just couldn't capture that.
 
Which actor, that guy in Twin Peaks or that Alec bloke? Which one?:confused:
