Confirmed: Charlie Kirk Slain in Utah

Turning Point USA has confirmed the death of Charlie Kirk. Per NBC News↱, "Kirk was 'murdered by a gunshot' at Utah Valley University, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA confirmed in a statement …".

Charles James Kirk was 31 years old, and is survived by a wife and two children.
 
Just seen this on the news feeds. Will be interesting to see the who and why of it. I understand a suspect was arrested but then released for not being the shooter, and that no further suspects have yet been arrested? But seems unclear.

Ironically, he was apparently talking on the subject of gun control at the time he was shot.

I also expect politicians to make the most of the tragedy.in the coming hours and days, making accusations even before accurate info is available.
 
Will say what I said in the other related thread:

Given Kirk's penchant for declaring that gun deaths were "unfortunately" worth it to keeping the Second Amendment, this does beg the question of whose deaths he had in mind - did he include himself in that reckoning? If posthumous mental function were possible, I'd have to wonder how many friends and family members he would now view as expendable for the sake of the Mighty Second.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no mood for karmic gloating - his murder is a despicable act and the rest of his life has been stolen from him. A life where he could have grown and witnessed more of gun-happy America and perhaps shifted his perspective on the relevance of "a well-regulated militia..." to actual life in the 21st century.

The phrase I question here is the bolded portion. Commencing roughly with the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas, during which a vehemently pro-gun, and also, apparently, pro-lynching, Jason Aldean was on stage, and including the confusing politics of the kid who "shot" Trump, these guys seem to have taken to taking out their own. We don't know much about Kirk's shooter yet, but I wouldn't at all be surprised.

For sure, I could edit that comment to "may or may not include Kirk." And no doubt there is more than one way to be opposed to a figure like Kirk, with diverse ideological lenses and others more personal. After all, they argued a long time over whether Huey Long was shot for his politics or his romantic entanglements. (IIRC the latter was eventually ruled out)

Although it's surely not the case, the smooth performance and elusiveness of the assassin is starting to make him look like a hired professional hitman, rather than the usual individual spurning his meds. Conspiracy territory bound, the longer he goes unidentified. Doubtless, the paranoia would include (among many other theories) a plot by a certain "other nation" to trigger a civil war in the US, if something doesn't break in either the "we know who he is" or the "capture department" soon.

Unfortunately, being a university campus, if the shooter was a student then one tends to blend in with the crowd. And with the ensuing panic after the actual shot, escape may have been surprisingly easy. Without a physical ID, it will take time to even pool together some likely suspects. But no doubt they'll start profiling, and then start rounding up all the transgender people, before widening the net to all Democrats. ;)

On the defense side there, is why would the applicable group want to turn Kirk into a globally recognized martyr, which is seemingly what he is becoming (especially in Israel). Though I don't expect the alternative of "extra-national origins" to be the most popular choice in conspiracy land, since Trump has already veered suspicions in the domestic direction. Even if the expected "random nutjob" is what surfaces, the latter may be disparaged as a patsy.

If information is released on the video captures of the suspect fleeing a rooftop and running through a neighborhood, and his face was unconcealed, then we'll more likely be lookihg at a nonprofessional. If he was masked and the recovered bolt action rifle is anonymized, then it will seem more like a pro.

Depend on Turnip to make this a radical Left plot, and escalate his police state agenda. If the shooter does turn out to be a campus-blending foreign national, then Turnip will recalibrate and use it to escalate his immigrant menace agenda.
 
Looks like Matt Dowd at NBC has been fired for saying what a lot of us were thinking. Naturally, the perpetual outrage brigade on SM shat themselves over his words, overreacting and taking it in the worst way.

Dowd said shortly after the shooting Wednesday that Kirk was a divisive figure “who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words which lead to hateful actions. And I think that’s the environment we’re in.”

I think that's fair, he did not say he got what he deserved.
 
What Do You See?

A shooter capable of a two hundred yard shot with a Mauser .30-06 leaves the rifle, spent cartridge, and bullets behind for law enforcement to find, as well as palm, foot, and finger prints.

The rifle is an older model imported Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle wrapped in a towel, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC News. The location of the firearm appears to match the suspect's route of travel, the sources said.

The spent cartridge was still chambered and three unspent cartridges contained wording on them expressing what some law enforcement officials described as "transgender and anti-fascist" writing, according to preliminary information shared with agencies. It's unclear what that means and authorities are still working to determine the meaning.

The firearm and ammunition have been taken by the FBI for DNA analysis and fingerprint impressions. Upon completion of forensics, the firearm will be disassembled for additional importer information.

It's still too early to draw any conclusions or, really, make any substantive assertions about this episode, but the last "transgender" shooter was also "bowl-pilled", and seemingly more the other than the one.

And that's the thing, I'm either waiting on what reads like speculative conspiracism, or a proverbial other shoe; just like it was inevitable that such violence would eventually get around to a right-wing celebrity, one of these shooters is eventually going to turn out to be both transgender and generally competent. But right now I doubt that until the suspect is in custody and I can see it for myself.

Because we're also on a pace that one of these days, Pepe the Frog really will be the co-conspirator. I just can't describe the nihilism required for that kind of political or existential statement. And that's what's going to sound ridiculous until it's in custody and we can see it for ourselves.

No, really: A Mauser. An old-school Mauser. And that sweatshirt? And leaving the spent cartridge in the chamber? Clearly, someone was making a statement, but do we think this assassin, having left vital evidence for authorities to follow, intends to be taken alive?
