Too soon yet to tell if dingoes were involved in her death on an East Australia island beach - that tiny spit just north of Brisbane.

I've been following the story (what story there is so far) but what caught my eye was this map on the news:

I don't believe I've ever seen a map of Australia marked up with inland lakes. Didn't know it had any. Thought I was seeing things.

Not sure they're permanent - they seem to be more like salt flats.

I'm sure there are maps showing these salt lakes, if you go looking for them, but this is a generic map of all of Australia.

James R: is this a common map where you hail from?

Here's a map of South Australia:

You ask if it is common to show physical land features on maps. I'd say that it is common enough. Maybe you're more used to seeing maps that emphasise political boundaries and such.

Huh. I like to think im a pretty map savvy guy. Ive roamed around Austrialia virtually more than once. My niece lives there.

But yeah, I've just never really noticed the lakes. My map-foo is rusty.

Learning more now that I'm binging Miss Fisher's Mysteries, set in Melbourne.

They are salt lakes mostly, although in extreme wet seasons and rare flood events, they can fill up. They are also part of what is called the Lake Ayre basin. I once worked for the Chemical Industry in Sydney, one of our products was manufacturing Chlorine. The salt used for that is carted by truck from that region.

On the young Lady, whose body was recently found on Fraser Island, (K,Gari) the autopsy has found she drowned, was washed up and the dingoes then played their part. The pack of dingoes that took part in the attack have all been culled.

Yes. I have been following the case. There had been some speculation that some of her injuries might have been peri-mortem, i.e. the dingoes may have been involved, but I haven't seen much about it since.
