Can you spot great art?

You would probably prefer the darker artists

like MF Husain, his art is largely heretical and invokes a lot of suffering

I find him a bit OTT

...

I prefer stuff like Turner's Slave ship. The angst without the whine

...
While I do appreciate such work, I'm more of a fan of surrealism and dada.

...what say you?

/curious

pay particular attention to the way the green material is artfully tucked into the division b/w both buttock cheeks so as to expose the smooth and tanned expanse of naked flesh

Gee, I like it too. :D

There is a distinct difference between "famous" art and "great" art. My Bach point was that the fellow was not even alive when he became "great" - during his lifetime he was just a guy who played the organ to feed his family.

Much like Van Gogh, who only sold one painting while he was alive - to his brother Theo for the equivalent of about $15.

IMHO, "great" art is arbitrary in nature rather than intrinsic.

Yes, if they had chosen this painting, I think I would have spotted that it was by an amateur.
The value in this painting lies in that it is of the area around Chartwell, his wartime home.
When Churchill spoke in his speeches about England, this is the England he meant. If he had been a great artist and could have captured all the emotion that was in his speeches in paint, this would have been his masterpiece.

Frankly I'm not certain what anyone sees in any of his paintings. I view a lot of art and maybe I'm biased, but even a monochromatic dabble from Constable looks far far superior to me than the details of Chartwell by Churchill. If he wasn't Churchill, I don't think his paintings would be worth anything

example of a Constable:Entrance to the Village of Edensor

Its really ridiculous when people pay millions for mediocre art.

A really great artist is distinguished by his style and flair as much as he is by his technique and composition

One of my faves:

You have to take into consideration that some people see Art as an Investment, especially art by Famous people or Famous Artists. The main reason for this is the "Unique" nature of their works because after all while they might have left this mortal coil, their exploits and paintings continue on.

Over time pieces are lost, stolen or destroyed and this again increases the value of the pieces that are left. (in fact you could consider some art thefts are done just to artificially bump the prices of other pieces by that "Master" at auction or private sale price)

Good Link. Worth reading.
If Hitler had been a better artist, he might never have become a dictator.

Did someone on here say they thought Hitler was a good artist?
He was a fairly good draughtsman. He was never an artist.

He was more of an illustrator than an artist. You need to know the background of his paintings [like Churchill] to figure out why they are significant.

A few quizzes to find out...

True art or fake?
Sort the famous abstract art from art drawn by the quiz author.

83%
Missed out on the Kandinsky color studies (duh), and that red-green thingy (I know there was one artist who in his old age got rather infantile and did things with paper and scissors, forgot which one).

Great artist or unknown?
Can you pick the paintings painted by great artists?

ImHo, Camille Pissarro is not a famous artist. So I got 92 on that one.

Artist or ape?
Can you tell the difference between human art and ape art?

100!

There are also some quizzes on great literature, picking the difference between the music of Mozart and Salieri and others...

Ha!
I gave up at "Machine translation or Faulkner?" LOL!!! 17%! Ha ha.

there are lots of good artists that aren't even famous. they usually work as illustrators for different publications or art is their hobby. some artists are just good at marketing themselves, not necessarily that they are that great.

i've seen some really beautiful or fantastic art that isn't famous. what's famous is what a select group of people with money decide should be famous.

(the last quiz was rather easy, the first two were blind luck and I actually chose what I thought might be a trick!)

Drawing blood while Europe took a nap
Europe was hardly napping. The entire Western world was in the throes of the Great Depression. Many countries were on the verge of economic collapse--peak unemployment in the USA was 25%. Realistically it was difficult for their governments to do anything.

Germany's problems started a decade earlier, as a result of the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles that ended WWI. Its economy was in ruins and it experienced an inflation rate of one billion percent in 1923. By the 1930s, when the entire Western economy was trembling, the Germans were so hopeless that they put their faith in a man who promised to restore their glory: Hitler.

Antisemitism was not an unpopular philosophy in Europe at the time. Germany's neighbors were hardly going to rise up against what Hitler was doing, until he actually began invading neighboring countries and they realized they might be next.
