A study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has shown an effective new method of treating asthma using a specific immunotherapy treatment method. The new treatment has been described by Professor Stephen Miller, the study’s most senior author, as a "universal treatment" that represents a "a novel, safe and effective long-term way to treat and potentially 'cure' patients with life-threatening respiratory and food allergies".
Scientists used antigens from allergens and conjugated these to nanoparticles made of biodegradable poly(lactide-co-glycolide). The group found treatment of mice with these particles effectively inhibited the allergic response and this was effective when the particles were given prophylactically, as they were well tolerated by animals sensitized for asthma. The nanoparticle were also partially effective at inhibiting allergic Th2 responses when administered therapeutically.
Biodegradable nanoparticles containing small amounts of allergen injected into the blood stream are able to cause the immune system to develop a tolerance to particles it traditionally would recognize as foreign. Under normal circumstances recognition of these allergens results in the development of a TH2 mediated allergic response.
