Just wondering what people think are the best examples of Scifi comedy, be it TV, books or movies. There's such a wide range of material about, sometimes using very similar plots with vastly different results. For example, try this rather simple plot:

A group of aliens come to Earth and try to blend in with human race in order to study them. OK, I know what you're thinking: "Third Rock from the Sun"... but this is also the plot of a British series called "The Strangerers" Both are very funny, but totally different. I like them both, but love the dialogue in the Strangerers...it's produced by the same crowd that did "Red Dwarf", so you know it's good.

As for movies, I used to be a bit of a Trek geek and just loved "Galaxy Quest". Books? Well Hitchikers Guide is still very funny in my estimation, and translated well to TV.

Cat is my man!

Can't, off-hand, think of a more original character.

Although, Sally is pretty easy on the eyes. :D

Take care. ;)

Well I havent read, seen or listened to Hitchhikers guide in any of its forms (book, TV, radio), so I'm probably missing out on something, and I havent seen the Strangerers either, but I used to absolutely love Red Dwarf.

I heard somewhere that the early episodes of RD looked very much like they had been influenced by Hitchhikers, but they also parodied other things like Alien in later episodes.

I used to really like some of the early episodes of 3rd rock, but its been ages since I've seen it and went off it a little bit.

Gotta go with Red Dwarf, though it did miss Arnold when he left. And yes Cat is one of the best Sci-Fi comic characters I've ever come across. The Dwayne Dibbly sketch is a classic and Backwards world a real hoot.
Hitchhikers were such brilliant books that the TV shows weren't able to do them true justice(still pretty good) Reminds me of the failure of Catch22 as a movie.

Michael Moorcock's End of Time books are well worth a read for humourous reading.

Spaceballs was fucking hilarious
Well, 'hilarious' in the sense that it had a few good jokes hidden amongst the tedious inanity. Well worth a watch, but hardly a classic.

In the realm of books, my favourite is The Brentford Triangle by Robert Rankin.
Can't think of any hilarious films offhand, but the best tv series was the first four series of Red Dwarf.
Strangerers: shite, shite, shite
