backslash777- man, machine, alien

I found it! Was lost in one of my backup CD's (was formating my pc recently). It is my log file on net search. search called- Artemida Project. Have a look. /777 is mentioned there too.

fascination

We are Backslash777. We require the toilet. Our sustained attendance will be interrupted while we purge ourselves of excessive fluid.
It is our intent to abandon this site for 09 hours 34 minutes and 43 seconds while we engage in leisure activities, sleep, labour and family love.
We observe the quantity of visits this site gathers.
At 17:09 GMT 15034 visitors had previously called on this site.
At 21:08 15575 visitors was recorded.
Should our return not come to pass we have been the prey of government intrusion and incarceration and will be in custody as you assimilate this passage. We will return upon our release.

(By the way, it must be psychological but writing as \777 seems to be a lot harder now my true self is exposed. Do you want samples of conversations I have had with people who said I could disclose what we chatted about on ICQ?)

Error

Hey, that program calles me /777 not \777. Let me guess, Microsoft. Never mind, they will be able to fix the bug by buying the next version. I doubt the patch will do the job...

I am sorry to those who took the thing seriously. I did not set out to go this far and I am sorry to those who feel gullible.

Seriously gullible? Hardly, but thanks anyway. :)

I was gullible. That's all I have to say.

This has been quite the saga, and with a fitting end.

Well done, Jonathan T.

I have contributed to this thread only once (I think), but I have been following the discussion and speculation along with the other few hundred people.

When you didn't reply to me, I figured you were most likely a person or a group of people, but you had me wondering a few times. I also thought that Porfiry probably knew what he was on about when he said \777 was a hoax.

What was all that stuff about the hacking into people's personal details? Did you use other persona and effectively talk to yourself, or were other people in on it? Or did you simply do a bit of web-surfing?

The idea of an AI (or aliens, or whatever) roaming the internet is a beguiling one, and you played the role very well. I noticed the odd spelling mistake and grammatical error, but you explained those away later, so that wasn't definitive. I couldn't catch you out on matters of fact, but as you say a lot of the topics you discussed didn't require difficult-to-obtain technical knowledge (which is why my initial post attempted to probe in that area).

I suspect that the \777 thing will not die. My prediction is that some people will simply refuse to believe that \777 is a single human being.

I take my hat off to you for pulling this off with such style. This story really deserves a place in internet folklore and I hope it becomes more widely known. Have you considered writing a book? It would be an interesting read.

When our conversation first began, Backslash's response time was nearly instantaneous. His responses to my questions appeared at most only two seconds after my question. Often, they appeared as I hit the send key. In some cases, the amount of words alone that he responded with would have required a great deal more than 2 seconds to type.

It is clear that if Backslash is an individual or group of people, then they have somehow developed a program that can monitor an individual's keyboard strokes and transmit them over the Internet. This is an extremely frightening thought. It means that Backslash now has access to all of my passwords, my private information, and anything else that potentially resides on my computer.

when i was in london last year away from my family, I often used icq to talk to them and i remeber sometimes what you just described occured.

i can assure you my family is not AIs.

Hey JT,
Nice stunt to pull off,as you might have noticed,i have always confronted the idea of AI on the web with such great knowledgehouse, that would really be something and the programmer would have earned a lot of money on that without B.Sing around here...anyway,Just give me an idea on the Algorithm that you'd expect in an AI...:)

bye!

i'm sure there are people who thinks this is a cover up... this shows human personality.

for those who believed, if i were you, i wouldn't still be kissing this guy's ass... i mean, i can't believe you are still kissing his ass (ALL of you, this is the most impressive), but just because he is english and i think english people are so polite, i won't say anything.

Great Show!

Good job Backslash777, you caught the imaginations of nearly a whole community and took us on an incredible journey!
:) Hope to talk to you soon

Ah! Finally the true color shows. Just one thing...I thought the Brits think in metrics and not in Lbs or Ft and inches first...

Good luck to whatever you think up next...

Metrics

In England we use imperial mainly. In recent years we have gone onto metric and it is illegal for a fruit and veg shop or butchers to use imperial scales.
What you do not see are metric scales but what you do see are loads of conversion tables posted up on how to convert metric into imperial.
I, to tell the truth, needed to get a tape measure to convert my height into metric and use my calculator to work out my weight.

Back from work

and I wasn't late either!

Well, so far I can only see one disgruntled poster (no one wants your opinion LUA) and not many replies yet to really tell judge. Maybe the offended ones are too cranky at YOU Jonathan that they're just getting ready for an onslaught. Bring 'em on.

Anyway, this is kinda like your 15 minutes of fame, only in cyberspace.

Come on people, what do you all think?

PS, Lua - no offence. Just thought it was funny.

Cheers
Teri
:D :D :D

PPS: I don't even know what the hell ICQ is. Can anyone tell me whether it's something I can download for free?

Yes, ICQ is free. To me it seems a bit slow and ugly though, so I just use Trillian... through Trillian you can use all the major IMs including ICQ.

If \777 listens to radio drama, like the HHGttG episodes (great series, great radio, I love it even though I never found the books worth reading), that's good enough for me to say it must be smarter than most humans.

I just have two questions left:

1) Who's rodent? If he's not a username you created then he'd seem to be delusional, so I hope he's one of your usernames.

2) Was the slip-up of signing that guestbook in August intentional? You should've known guestbook entries show up in google, and so using backslash777@bigfoot.com to sign a guestbook made it easy for anyone searching to stumble across you.

Good show, even though I didn't come in 'till near the end.

As far as talking to real bots (which are unfortunately less impressive), anyone know what the most realistic one online might be? The best I've seen so far is Alice.

Alice is a variation of Eliza. Works OK if you did not took apart and modified Eliza to have more fun. I gave up after a week of playing around with Eliza. I had bigger fish to fry like programming an expert system to control some parameters at a refinery. I have not found an application that companies are willing to pay money to use.

If I have an opportunity, I may do it in five years or so....

Could someone tell me what alice is? I'm checking out the website but don't see a 'general description for newbies.' Upon looking at it further it appears that it is some sort of a program, does it chat with human users? It looks like you can modify the source code for it to suit your own needs but I am pretty clueless but nonetheless interested.

I also want to know who the hell rodent is!

It was a HELLOFA ride.

AI

I have spent a while reserching AI and although I am not the super being you once thought I was I can still go on fact finding missions for you all or comment on what I already know about.
In answer to the post I made disclosing my addy, I did not hide myself at all. In fact, I half wanted to be disproved finally- I even opened up an account on EBAY under my Backslash777 name free for anyone to look up and you will see that Backslash777 went on a Caravan holiday at Butlins and that \777 bought some SD ram and that \777 tried to sell a Guns and Roses record too. I even hinted that I had an account there to some users too.
