Are you ashamed of your ancestors?

From another thread:

There is no doubt that it sucks to be in a world controlled by the delusions of theists, but that will some day come to and end. And, when the people of the future look back (assuming they have survived from the destruction of cults) they will view your cult for what it is. Your children's children will view you with contempt and disdain for your ignorance and lack of foresight. They will see you as a small child that never grew up from believing in myths and superstitions.

This post [directed at me] got me thinking.

Do people feel embarassed and ashamed for their ancestors beliefs, thoughts and deeds?

Do they view them with " contempt and disdain for your ignorance and lack of foresight"?

Why would anyone do this?

For the record, I rarely think about my ancestors.:p

Hindsight is also 99% revisionist. Still, I see what you mean

No. We should all definitely all be aware of who they were and the seriously unsavory things most--if not all--of them did. Learn the lessons. Move beyond them.

I'm not saying this.

It is important that we learn lessons from the past, lest we not repeat them. Judging ones actions, though, is probably best left to his moral contemporaries.

I'm not talking about generalities, but specifics.

Is there anything your great-grandfather or -mother did that makes you ashamed of being related to them?

It is weird because ancient people are often looked down upon as simple and uneducated and really by todays standards they were. Then we also build up some mythical superpeowers around them and frankly it is getting to be real annoying ans a bit childish.

i am not certain about my exact ancestors or what nationality i am so i cannot say but i cannot see why i would be ashamed. what do i care if they were backwards or not.

I am in no way shape or form ashamed of my Ancestors. What they did they had good reason for doing. They made decisions on the information they had. Do I agree with what was done for the most part no I do not but that would be for another post.

Is this true, at all? Because it's certainly not true today---do you always carefully weigh every decision that you make? Even the seemingly inconsequential ones?

Sure do saves one from get screwed in the end.

Shame is about guilt and regret. It has more to do with disgrace and dishonor.

Embarassment is simply feeling awkward, timid or inept. It has more to do with insecurity and social graces - fear of committing a faux pas.
