There used to be a demo in the Science Museum which fascinated me as a kid. I also recall seeing a bank of them in real life operation, in a substation outside Embankment Underground station, at the end of the 1970s.
They have a wonderfully alien vibe about them.

Today, at one of the metro stations in Moscow, the bas- relief of Stalin was returned. This is the "bottom".
