Ambidextrous

I'm quasi-ambidextrous. I'm predominantly right-hand, but use my left hand when I put pen to paper while either writing or drawing. I've also found that this allows me to use my left hand easily with certain tasks when it's more convenient to do so.
I'm mostly left-handed, though I generally play stick sports right-handed.

Oh who am I kidding. I don't play sports.

I had no real preference of hands until after starting primary school. And my parents felt no need to encourage me one way or the other. I settled on my left for writing. I wanted to play guitar left handed too, but the kid who was showing me told me I was holding it upside down. (OK - whatever...) Everything else migrated to the right hand - probably because we live in a righthanded world.

My wife complains that I twist the tie on the loaf of bread backwards.
Similar. Left-handed for writing/drawing/painting, soldering electronics, using a knife, but I play most instruments right-handed. For most other things, I'm ambidextrous, which is great for repetitive things which require some strength--using a hammer, drill, saws, etc.--because I can just switch hands when I tire, or if the task is more easily performed with the other hand.

А какая нога у вас ударная?

Does a fiddle count?

A fiddle player has a bit more elbow room as he is usually in a smaller, looser, ensemble and he is usually the only one.

Pretty certain my mum told teachers not to ask me to try and write right handed because of King George VI and his stutter.
That would have been 1971. Thanks mum.

What mum got wrong was she told me I was ambidextrous when I am not. I found that out much later.

I liked the idea that lefties were more intelligent. Wrong also, not sure where I picked that up. Newton, Einstein and Curie perhaps?

Also.

Paul McCartney
Jimi Hendrix
Ian Paice

What other left-handed drummers are there?

Phil Collins
Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo)

The crusty end pieces of the loaf.
Ah the crusts. Is this a term used in connection with sliced bread? (Crossed with the previous post.)

It seemed strange as “heels” sounds as if they are thought less good to eat. Whereas with bread generally the crust is the best bit, so the ends of the loaf are sought after. At least that has always been my experience.

Since lefties have a higher mortality rate due to living in a predominantly right-handed world, we should have been selected against, and weeded out of the gene pool. The fact that we have not, and indeed are increasing in numbers, suggests that being a leftie confers some useful survival advantage. Hypotheses include higher intelligence, better looking, finding more change in couch cushions and being better lovers in the sack.

My niece (also left handed) claims we die younger due to ink poisoning.

I concur. I'm sick of these privileged right hand fascists, up the revolution. We demand:

Tin openers that make sense and don't hurt my thumb.
Scissors.

Some other stuff. Power to the people! All 15% of us.

Big advantage in sports like footie and cricket, I gather. Also in fencing, as my son discovered.

I suspect most lefties play right handed. Several years ago I was regular at an open mic. There were a lot of talented musicians there. Only two played left handed, but I watched many regulars sign the list with their left.

Gretch look beautiful, never played them.

Here he has his hi hat BEHIND his toms.....

Whoever taught him needs putting in the stocks.

On the other hand, you and Micky have encouraged me to pull the drum kit out of storage and try setting it up however is comfortable for me. Maybe I can start making sense of it.
