It can be used to kill off life as we know it in its entirety.
The death of millions of aquatic and bird life when oil spills happen are somethings it does.

Just look around you. You're surely in a civilized area since you're on the internet. You will see hundreds of things that answer your question. If that doesn't do it fer ya, start reading labels.

Therefore it should come as no surprise at all that almost everything man-made in the world is made up of petroleum. Fuel oil. Plastics. Synthetic fabrics. Fertilizers. Cars. Computers. Semiconductors.
70% of the barrel of oil goes to transportation fuel and 98% of transportation fuel is derived from petroleum.
Construction of the average car consumes somewhere between the energy equivalent of 27 and 54 barrels of oil depending on whose statistics you use.
The average desktop computer requires 10 times it's weight in hydrocarbons to manufacture.
The average semiconductor requires 630 times it's weight in hydrocarbons to manufacture.
Every calorie of food that you eat requires 10 calories of hydrocarbon energy to produce.

Not to much of anything good comes from crude oil or any of the fossils. Here is a great list you can give your teacher.:shrug:

Crude oil does not come from fossils. The deepest fossil ever discovered was 7,382 feet below the sea floor. Deep water drillers extract petroleum from 30,000 feet below the sea floor.

He needs to know things like all kinds of plastics, pharmaceuticals, man-made fibers, etc.
He's just too lazy to type fossil fuel and silly enough to think that half a term is accurate enough.
No such thing as so-called "fossil" fuels. Fossils have never been made into fuel.
Despite your statement, I'm sure you know the term and it's meaning.
The term is ridiculous and it's meaning is absurd.

Not nearly so much of either as your attitude and statement about peak oil being a hoax. What planet do you live on? It isn't the one the rest of here share.
