One of my personal principles is that it is important to operate within the norms and values of the local human society. I refuse to compromise on that principle!

Hmm, yeah, but just who sets those "norms and values"? And regardless of who does it, you refuse to compromise? Surely you don't believe that, do you?

I mean, think of it this way ...if you were somehow transported back to the old south in the USA during the early 1800s, would you have gone along with the "norms and values" of slavery? ...without compromise?

If you don't believe in your own principles, you'll just follow someone elses. And unless you have the perfect teacher, you'll just repeat someone elses mistakes.

Hmm, where do you think people get their principles? You seem to think that we're born with them?! We learn our principles from our parents, friends, neighbors, etc. A kid born of racist parents and societal friends is probably going to be a racist ...and that's a big ditto for most any other principles.

Well, we learn from others, but the slim diffrence is whether you do as others tell you to or make what others say into what YOU say.

Or whether we copy others or learn from others. And it's not just what you've seen, but what you thought of it. One guy sees a robbery and thinks it's okay to rob, other guy says it's wrong off the bat.
