https://phys.org/news/2023-09-mathematical-proof-reveals-insights-typhoon.html I thought this was pretty cool, note that he is using solutions to Euler from 1757! I assume it is this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inviscid_flow Note Navier Stokes is in there too, that was used during covid for a couple of studies about ventilation in a room regarding the dispersal of the virus. I am not a mathematician but finding out about these modern application in science and technology is interesting.

The first thing that sprang to mind when I saw the diagram was ball lightning - which I have seen once, in a tank farm on an oil plant, during a thunderstorm. I hope this mathematical results finds some confirmed real world applications.

I really hope so too. The author mentioned predicting Weather patterns. Some of the technologies that have come about via abstract mathematical theories are now part of the modern world. No one (general population) has heard of Riemann, they may not have heard of Einstein field equations either but everyone knows what GPS is.
