Anyone else psyched for this movie? I gotta say, that is probably one of the most well developed and interesting movie trailer i've ever seen, had me hooked instantly...the NIN music was a perfect choice on top some incredible imagery.

    Now that's good production.

That definitely does look cool as shit.
However, historical accuracy seems a bit iffy at best.

    Spartans talking about Freedom?
Oh come now. That's just... wrong.
The movie is going to completely fail to shed light on the true nature of Spartans in specific and the ancient Greeks in general.
Of course, most modern day sensibilities would be horribly shocked by knowledge of what the Greeks were really like.

(It is most likely going to come off as a blatant propaganda piece. Western culture fighting for freedom against the middle eastern assholes. Sound familiar?)

    Heh...

well it is based on the graphic novel, not the actual history of the battle.

I am just excited about how beautifully the filmmakers have realized the vision of the comic book. Each frame of the film looks like a painting. This isn't the original trailer I saw of the film (this one reveals more of the story) but the intial theatrical trailer shows some truly inspired imagery.

The scene with Xerxes sitting on his throne between 2 golden bulls is just awesome...

Hey Geroge Lucas, take note...this is how you use CGI. It should enhance a story, not compensate for it.

I really want to watch this movie.
So much so, in fact, that I suspect subliminal messaging in the trailer...
    Heh.

Seriously. This looks kickass (with the sole exception of the freedom chatter.)

March 9th is a long fucking ways away.

Is this movie based on a book, or a comic, or what?

Speaking of which, I've been reading into this a bit and found that the Spartans, in the comics (available for download by the enterprising individual), speak not of Freedom but Justice.
This does sound more like the Spartans.

It's a pity that the theme was changed in order to appeal to patriotism.
But, at the same time, the Spartans would have thoroughly approved... they were masters of controlling their population through propaganda and cultural memes.

I've never been this excited to watch a movie based on a comic book based on a history of a semi-mythical event.

By the way, much is made in the trailers of the Spartans kicking the Persian messengers down the well... But, apparently Athens did the same thing.

Strange coincidence of events, actually. Especially considering how unseemly killing messengers is. It's against protocol.

Another odd thing about this is that apparently, Herodotus writes that Xerxes' father, Darius, also sent messengers to Athens and Sparta demanding homage. Earth and water as a token of submission. And not only were the demands identical, but so too were the actions of the Spartans and the Greeks.

I have this feeling that Herodotus is smearing his history a bit here.
If not, then I find the duplication to be a strange thing in itself.

Apparently, Sparta later sent messengers to Xerxes apologizing for their unseemly behaviour in the time of Darius and offered the messengers' lives to Xerxes as recompense. The messengers were wealthy and illustrious citizens. Xerxes laughed, tis said, and refused to lower himself as the Greeks had done.

Frankly, I find the whole affair confusing.
Perhaps Herodotus was in his cups?

I love the stories theme and genre, but I'm put off by the movie.

When I saw the preview at the movies (which might have been extended) it looked like a lot of shouting, killing, and special effects. Who produced this movie, the WWE?

I also think I subconsciously have a problem with hollywood actors portraying these roles like this, where they define the characters by their fighting ability. I just can't buy it. This is why I didn't like the Sopranos... I didn't buy into some overweight guys being tough.

I've never watched the sopranos, but you've never seen a fat guy who can handle himself? How about this guy? 'Fat Pete'

Herodotus wasn't the most... unbiased of historians.

Only in the NFL, and only for intervals of about 30 seconds! As for the guy in the pic... never seen him before. What about him?

He a real mobster from back in the day, Peter Chiodo. He was a Luchesse capo in New York. I think he was an 'executioner' before that. Also, John Gotti wasn't very skinny either. *The legendary John Gotti, the 'Telflon Don'. The way I took your post, you were saying all fat people are pussies...horrible stereotype, that's like saying all Chinese people are pussies.

Heh...I know some people who'd disagree. Also, what kind of gangsters are the sopranos without guns?
