1 spoon + 1 spoon = 1 spoon & 1 spoon
One practical result of learning to count in school is that you can summarize something like "1 spoon & 1 spoon & 1 spoon & 1 spoon & 1 spoon & 1 spoon" with the more compact and equally informative "6 spoons".

True, but dude wasn't abstract about his variables. He specifically labeled them 'fork' and 'spoon'.
Example,

One fruit + one fruit = two fruits (x+x=2x)

BUT,

one apple + one orange = one orange and one apple (x+y=(x+y))
We can also define a 2 dimensional fruit-basket space over the reals of basis {apple, orange}.
