The Purpose of Life

Maybe it helps to distinguish between purpose and function? Many times we use the word purpose to merely mean function. Other times, we refer to the end goal of a sentient being, usually something arrived at via some existential narrative. (the meaning of life stuff) We act to preserve our own lives, eat, poop, reproduce, and raise more humans, but that usually is taken as a more functional (and less teleological) description. Purpose seems to come more from an individual developing a vision of what is important in their lives, both in the personal sense, and as a member of a human community.

Produce what?

I have not reproduced, though I have raised two fine young men and two grandchildren.

Am I purposeless in your eyes?

Well, I recycle my pop cans, so I guess I'm not destined to be pushed out into the ocean on an ice flow quite yet. Thanks for being merciful.
Yeah, you're purposeless. Not really, but your angst is far too evident to discard. Life produces. Period. We produce. Everything living produces. Period. This isn't about kids. Life produces. Sometimes it RE produces and it recycles.

Period.

Period.

Ok?

I had a shit life too.

I'm not purposeless, either.

Ok?

Apparently my purpose in life is to teach my nieces' daughters how to play guitar. Both are around 13. One of them has set Sultans of Swing as her goal. Other one is tackling Blackbird. I may not have raised them, but they do share my DNA.

The horrors of Black Bird. These are part of my "COVID-19 sessions."
As yet unreleased but I am waiting on EMI for that callback.

They're taking lessons, I'm just the uncle coaching from the sidelines. Luckily I've known Blackbird for decades. Sultans has sent me back to the tab while I have her work on the rhythm.

If they like those tracks at 13? They have already done it. Heart first then fingers.

Valiant effort. Paul's vocals are way out of my range. I feel like I'm singing way down in Tom Waits range or up in the stratosphere with Jon Anderson.

It was a guitar exercise not vocals but I cannot help singing. Just for context.
Plus McCartney is my favourite vocalist. Or Gillan

I was surprised at their taste in music. It's like they've been listening to their grandparents' record collections. I was expecting to have to learn some Taylor Swift if I wanted to play along with them.

What they like they like but when they connect with our heros it is magical.

I don't know if that magic is part of the purpose of life, maybe it's just the gravy on top. But since I haven't been able to find any purpose for life, the universe and everything, I'll be content to mop up the gravy.

Music production ... The wheels are always spinning and with my heartbeat comes a unique flavor and sound. Any additional input from others would inevitably add to the music produced.

I was my dad before Mom produced me from herself, so I became unique and individually different from both of them, but both hearts beat inside of me and the spinning wheels from my programming.

Production

I don't know how to play guitar. I am thinking about learning how to utilize a DAW like Avid Pro Tools. I would have a unique sound based on my origins.

I' may be too old to have kids at 54, but music may be an adequate option to keep producing.

I use Reaper, it's free with a startup ad, easy to use and has ample options and functionality. I paid the $10 for the ad free version.

I just added some new tunes to my repertoire, one of them was 'Let me Roll it" - has been one of my fave tunes since it came out.

I'm going to be embarking on a new project his year that requires I play keyboards in a live situation. At best, I know some chords but here's how I'll do it. You can use the same method for guitar.

1. Learn some chords and practice them for a while
2. Bring up some songs you want to learn from sites such as 'Ultimate Guitar" for example. There you will see the chords and when to play them in the song
3. Look up on youtube if anyone is teaching the song, usually you'll find it somewhere and can watch and learn
4. Play along to the song until you got it
5. Join a band

To listen or to play? You have the "Wings over America" tour recorded in 76 I think. Some great stuff on there.
"Bluebird" is one of my favourites but "Maybe I'm amazed" is something else.
Different to the studio but I think he was wise not to force that line.

" Ever help me."

And play with a friend. Especially early doors.
