I shifted towards the punk culture about a year and half ago. I quit my Nu-Metal and Alternative Rock band Psycho Bound for my current anarcho-punk band Anarchists United. After finding punk, i also found myself. I lost my homophobic, religious, rightest views and opened my mind for the first time in my life. About 6 months ago, i found anarcho-communism and have been educating myself further about the only political view that has ever made sense to me. All thanks to old Green Day, Anti-Flag and Bad Religion. The first three punk bands that i extensively listened to. Punk rock makes me feel free, and im so glad i discovered it.
Just my semi-rant of the day. :p

I'm a bit older now, and my punk days are a bit behind me. (mostly)

Anti-Flag and Bad Religion are good...Green Day, is just a pseudo-punk band. (sell outs)

I recommend old school bands..

Velvet Underground.

The Stooges.

Circle Jerks.

Sex Pistols.

Bad Brains.

Black Flag.

The Clash.

The Dead Kennedy's

And, "X"....Happy listening..:cool:

Havent heard of Bad Brains or Velvet Underground but i love the other bands :)
 
I was a punker back in the late 70's thru the 80's..

Was kinda weird, being "anti-establishment" considering I was in the military at the time...LOL

Geez, after discussing this topic, I feel like hearing some Dead Kennedy's now..

I think I will..:D

Interestingly enough none of those bands would have been able to perform, let alone form, in a communist country that i am aware of. But dont let facts stop you.:rolleyes:

I would add The Misfits as my favorite punk band (Danzig was a better lead vocalist only real competition for vocal were the Clash who were more than just a punk band anyway). Interestingly enough some of my favorite Clash songs dont sound like punk at all..."i'm all lost in the supermarket, i came in here for that special offer guaranteed personaliteee" The Ramones for best under 3 minute adrenaline hit and again very humorous lyrics and not run of the mill cry baby crap. Had more of a theme going on and a sense of humor that made them more bearable. Supposedly Iggy and the stooges started punk off.

Of course 70s punk was forgotten about after 80s metal came around. Good riddance afa i am concerned. It was just more honest and better musicianship all around if you ask me.

I'll take Punk over Metal anyday...With a few exceptions.

As far as best under 3 mins...The Dead Kennedy's win hands down.

Early Ramones was masterful stuff though. Well its just a matter of opinion.

For me...good riddance to punk. I just like the fantasy type lyrics metal had and the musicians were in a completely different league...except for the Clash, if you consider them to be punk. and where you have some mini story behind a song and more theatrical. But even the Misfits based nearly all their songs off horror movies and doubt they wrote any of it to be taken seriously. Even still the slasher movies from the time were kind of disgusting, at least to me now and cant even watch that garbage anymore. Just so gratuitous and yet it was commercial and in movie theaters.:shrug:

Ok..Yeah, early Ramones stuff was pretty good...Before they sold out, like Green Day did..

I just like punk for it's overall honesty...The better bands had a message to send...Unlike all the mainstream full of angst, but I wanna make a buck BS we have these days.

Punk is basically dead these days...But, I will always have a place in my heart for it..I have never gotten into the punk look, like mohawks and 500 zippers on my pants...But, I liked the message the music sent..

It mainly said, we aren't conformists, and we are saying so.

Hell, if ya saw me, you'd see a clean cut all-American..Doesn't mean I subscribe to the norm. (though I do work for the Gov't)

I liked Bad Religion,NOFX, Millencollin, Rancid,Goldfinger & Reel Big Fish.. Rancid and Millencolin make a cameo on my ipod now and again, but nowhere near as much as they used to..
I did like my Punk boys.
what was the Ban that Henry Rollins was in ?? I used to like them.. hhhmmm, i can't remember what the band was called....

Black Flag...Then he formed The Rollins Band..
 
If your band has "anarchist" in the name then I recommend you listen to Crass, their first 6 albums at least. I also recommend Flux of Pink Indians, they arrived a bit late to the punk movement but they left their mark. Conflict are worth a listen, although I never really rated them. Rudimentary Peni are also worth a punt, Zounds (Their first album on Rough Trade is good) and Poison Girls have some good stuff too.

Anarcho-punk can get a bit preachy at times.

If you wanna broaden your horizons a bit, then I can't recommend Wire (especially Pink Flag) enough. These guys were making post-punk before punk had even died.

I've only listed British punk, but there's plenty of US stuff I could also list. I mostly listen to US 80s hardcore and thrash, Canada has an awesome hardcore scene as well.
