Having had Norton 360 installed for all of 3 days now, I appeared to have contracted a virus that has fucked it right up.
I cant access it at all- it's like it isn't even there but the buttons and options are, they just dont do anything- and I cant get anywhere near the Symantec website cos each time I do I'm thrown right back to Google. The rest of the web is open to me though.

I've tried to find a FREE spyware program and installed one or two (and they've found hundreds of problems) but the problem is they're not really free. I'd have to pay to have the problems solved and I just cant do that- no credit card.

I'mworried I'm gonna lose a lot of work on my pc. Can anyone help?

Okay you're probably best getting hold of Hijackthis!.

Run a scan with that program and it will generate a log file report. You can post that here and people will be able to see if there is a virus present or if it's just a problem with Norton.
I'm guessing there are going to be a number of processes that will need closing however this can only be assured if we can look at that log. (You should go through it before hand to make sure there is no information you don't want divulged on it)

Will do. There's nothing I'm aware of on my pc that I shouldn't have there and I dont buy online so there's no details that could harm me.
    Thanks for this.
I'll post my findings as soon as.

I just installed and ran Spyware Doctor and it found and fixed over 300 problems, some serious.
I still cant access Norton though, which is a pisser as I just bought it.
Do you think a reboot will fix this?
And what program should I use to generate a log file report?

A reboot probably could have. Give it a go, anyhow the program I mentioned was Hijackthis for creating the log file (link at top of other post)

Reboot didn't seem to help. I'll stick Hijackthis on now.

It will not let me link to that, or any other, spyware removal site. I keep getting Ooops! Connection broken, etc.
But I can surf the rest of the web just fine!

I have a bad feeling that the "free" program you're talking about is Win Anti Virus Pro, which is some of the nastiest spyware out there. I'd suggest doing a System Restore, and using the earliest restore date you can. Start, Run, type MSconfig, then use the Launch system restore tab.

Then go and get Spybot Search and Destroy.

If I do that, I'll lose everything on there wont I?
Cos I've never created a restore point and I have 2 years work on here!
Also, what do I do about Norton? I just bought it Friday!

    Try this: www.chatsoba.com/hijackthis.zip

It's the Zipped version of Hijack this I just download from there site and housed on my own.

As for Norton, well they always seem to get attacked a lot of the time. Various viruses do attempt to disable antivirus programs and obviously as you've noticed access to their sites. Obviously they try to update and patch against it but it usually isn't long before another Strain is created.

No, you won't. It automatically creates restore points. If you restore to a point prior to installing a program, you would have to reinstall it. I'll change my suggestion from the earliest possible restore point, to one a day or so prior to your noticing a problem. If you bought Norton online, then you have your registration information saved somewhere, and can simply reinstall it. If you bought it on CD, it's even easier. Norton isn't an anti virus program that I would have suggested, but I guess you might as well stick with it since you've purchased it (at least until it is time to sign up again, then get something like Avira).

You can pick up a cheap external HD and copy whatever stuff you're worried about onto it. If it's all text and spreadsheets you could probably just get a little usb key. Then restart with command prompt and format c: You might have to unlock your boot sector too, but I have to go look that stuff up.

I downloaded that and unzipped it but, when I try to use it, nothing happens! It's all there (300-something MB) but I just can't get anything from it.

I only got online last Tuesday and havent installed anything significant since, so do you think that's my best course of action? A restore?
And I think I can squeeze my most important files (mainly Word files and a few pictures) onto a memory stick, and the rest can be replaced.
As for the Norton, I went thirds on a cd deal with 2 friends. Norton 360 allows you to install it on 3 pcs, so I wonder if I can get away with a reinstall...?
(I'm queing with them (on a friends pc) for a Chat now, so I'll ask them).

The file should be about 300kb, the file is in a ZIP format, the .EXE inside you should be able to run, there is no need to install.

    I meant kb!
I extracted it to my desktop and clicked on it but nothing at all happens.
It's as if this virus knows it'll be bad for it and is protecting itself...
(Do they really do that or have I seen too much sci-fi?)

Some do that, there is also the possibility that Norton while not working is actually semi-working and stopping things working. The antivirus itself might be acting a virus (Otherwise you have a trojan)

Can you get up your Task Manager with CTRL+ALT+DEL?

Yeah but I'm at a friends house using her PC to try and contact Norton.
Go for it anyway cos I'll be back home in an hour or two and I can go through it then.
If you don't mind, of course!

You're talking about reinstalling Windows, which is not what I'm talking about.

    System Restore
