Too early to tell, but could possibly be the smoking gun that they have been looking for. Also watching live shots on the news of what may be a mobile bio-lab. They found a truck with a fake wall that apparently set off their geiger counters. Have to see how this develops, of course, but...

    News-speak

Depending on what the material is, they might be able to claim it's collected DU from the first Gulf War. However, if they actually have "moble bio-labs", it would be a testament to Iraqi ingenuity, as international "experts" didn't believe such facilities were feasible.

And while I'm pretty sure they're going to find the weapons they're looking for eventually, and while I'm pretty sure it will be a legitimate discovery and not a plant, I will laugh at the lot of you if Saddam is just jerking us around.

And in the meantime, the amount of FOX newsspeak is just annoying; why not wait until there's actually a story to cover?

so what up with the need for a smoking gun? aint it just an opportunity to say "i told you so"? can the relations b/w usa and the world really get much worse? this wmd stuff is moot, it is irrelevant. saddam is history. lets move on. liberation at this time means nothing but the freedom to loot, murder and rape.

first of all, if Saddam had WMD, he would have used them already.
Secondly, if he was developing WMD, he wouldn't have gone very far with UN inspectors up his ass indefinetly.
So what. they found, or they will find the "smoking gun"? -- Iraq (like any other country) is morally justified in developing any kind of weapon it wants.

While I'm quite sure if this, or any other discovery, turns out to be the real thing, it won't be a plant, I will laugh too if Saddam has just been jerking us around. He'll laugh all the way to the grave.

I agree. FOX has been almost as big a cheerleader as Al Jazeer was. As far as why not wait, that should be obvious. Every channel is looking to outscoop the competitors. They're not liable if these don't turn out to be legitimate.

    I told you so.

Just kidding, of course, I only posted this to get the expected reactions.

And you know this for a fact because...?

Well, Iraq was a signatory to treaties that said they couldn't.

I'm sick of that stupid smoking gun thing. We know they have weapons, and we've got proof. It's not weapons, it's the paperworks. Every ultimatum and such has been broken. There's also loads of other things.

No, you were implying he doesn't have them. "If he had them he would use them" is the equivalent of "he didn't use them so he doesn't have them."

Of course they're not the first, and I suspect they won't be the last, but I think they discovered that you can't continue to break them indefinitely.

I agree completely that a nation has the right to protect itself and its interests. Even the US.

It was a lot more radioactive than any depleted uranium. More the "cook your brains" than "give you a nasty mole on your neck" type.

Great! I'm glad we agree on the rights of Iraq to have developed any weapons they wanted.

Until the UN stated otherwise. And they did. Numerous times.

hmm is seem as if the us has to, at all costs, need to find wmd in iraq.
they will, even if they have to plant em themselves.

All right, then countries must obey the UN? .. you know where I'm going with this ...don't you?

Do you believe in the UN?:
Doing something without UN authorization is illegal. Iraq (probably) developed WMD, and USA attacked Iraq without UN approval. Both countries committed crimes.

    OR

Do you believe that UN is useless (mostly):
Iraq started developing weapons it needed in order to defend itself. USA attacked to preserve its interests (and arguably its safety). Both countries are (equally) within their moral rights.

Both damn countries are equally good OR equally bad.

Yes, and I have the right to kill anybody I want until I'm caught .

Absolutely not. I'm a true blue American, but I'm not a fan of Bush. I never bought the Saddam-bin Laden connection. I had no faith in the UN sanctions, however, and I believed that only the threat of force would sway Saddam. However, he didn't buckle under the threat of a build-up. I didn't see the point of continued inspections as I never thought they were aggressive enough, and although I opposed the war in the early stages I finally believed that war was the only option left. I belive that the Arab world only respects strength. Why else would they have loved Saddam so much even though he was a secular dictator? Because they believed in his strength against the infidels. But he let them down.

I was annoyed the label Operation Iraqi Freedom because that seemed to come out of left field. I believe that was pure propaganda to garner support for the war, and I believe the media has focused on the celebrations to back that up. I don't believe that will be enough to justify the war though, and the WMDs will have to be there. It was a brilliant bit of propaganda though, although now the pressure is on Bush to back it up. I don't think that the rebuilding of Iraq will be easy, but no project ever is. The birth of this nation was a struggle and we barely survived the first 25 years. But let's don't doom it before it begins.

The UN weapons inspectors searched the al-Tuwaitha site no less than 14 times in the four months prior to their being evicted by Bush. They had placed seals across the doors at this site; seals which now have been broken.

    Speaking of FOX News:

"...The LA Times ran an interesting poll on the subject last week which showed that 69% of those surveyed were turning to cable news - CNN, Fox or MSNBC. This compares with 30% for newspapers, 23% for local television news, 18% for network news and 13% who go online. Radio news got 8% and "family and friends" 2%. (People could list three sources.)...

Fox News, for instance, which pulls in a larger audience now that CNN, is owned by Rupert Murdoch and makes no great secret of its conservative bias. The station's slogan, "fair and balanced", is meant as a knowing joke and not to be taken seriously; I have seen enough "Faux News" T-shirts in the Fox News logo to realise that most people are in on the joke.

Equally, Clear Channel Communications, which owns 1200 radio stations, has been leading the charge by publicising pro-war rallies. It was Clear who, after September 11, advised their stations not to play certain deviant records - such as Imagine, for instance.

Critics of Clear suggest that the gung-ho support will not be unhelpful at a time when the federal communications commission is considering whether to regulate the number of stations one company can own. It may be depressing that one company owns so many stations - six times the number of its nearest rival - but it cannot be a surprise what they do with that power..."

This is exactly why our laws used to prohibit the concentration of media ownership by a few individuals. Sigh...

    BTW, last night on Yahoo:

"NBC to Make Movie About Rescued POW Lynch
    Thu Apr 10,11:00 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - NBC is hurrying development of a movie about the rescue of POW Jessica Lynch.

The network is meeting with potential writers and producers for a made-for-TV film intended to air early in the 2003-04 season, a network spokeswoman said Thursday...."

    ...What can I say, Foxnews....

Sure, the iraqis just collected all the DU ammo of the americans from the previous war and made plutonium from it

Meanwhile: have you seen the movie, Sum of all Fears ?

If I was an independant inspector, I would do an extensive trace-count for other elements, to make sure this piece of (unconfirmed yet) has not the same composition of plutonium made by reactors in Dimona...
