    Greetings all.

OK.. so I've finally managed to figure out my BootVis problem, and now.. when I try to run it... I get an error message telling me "To collect traces, the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Me\My Documents must have write permissions."
Sooo.. does anyone have an idea what this means???
    TIA

Does the user 'me' have admin rights?

the normal operation of the operating system.

This is a very old thread so I hope some one manages to respond.

I am experiencing the very same problem as glaucon involving bootvis. It's good to know that I an not missing any benefits so often touted as provided by bootvis. I guess it is a shame that this rumor is so often spread by people who I would expect to know what they are talking about.

I am curious to know just how or when the OS (XP) does this job. Is it done during Defrag? If so, what if I am using a third party defrag tool such as ScanDefrag at runscanner.net/files/exe/scandefrag/scandefrag.exe.aspx

I have been using bootvis occasionally over the years and it never [seemed] to make a differece. But since I am suddenly experiencing the (C:\Documents and Settings\Me\My Documents must have write permissions) problem, I am concerned. What might be the cause of the problem? Is it some thing that should be fixed? And if so, how do I fix it?

    Thanks.

I can't say I know the answer, however I would suggest that perhaps the "write permission" is referring to what User the program is run as. Namely if the program doesn't run as the same user level as the Document and Settings folder it won't allow it to write.

Incidentally I think Bootvis would only show a visable impact on older, slower drives considering all it does is analyse what loads at boot and attempts to re-allocate those executed files to be more ergonomically position for future bootups. Most modern computers are fitted with Harddrive's that don't just have extra Cylinders and Heads over older drives, but they also are fitted with precache RAM to speed up the process of retrieving files. This basically means they were built to deal with the lack of analysis and therefore counter what Bootvis attempts to do. (Do understand this is an Educated guess into how I believe it operates as opposed to actually knowing

    Thanks Stryder.

Guess I'll go ahead and get rid of bootvis since it really isn't doing anything for me.

It just seems strange that as Admin I can't run it even in Safe mode. I recently got rid of Shared Folders from My Computer since I have no need for it. I figured that may have something to do with it, so I undid it. But still no go.

I've been trying to get XP Home looking and working like 98/ME as much as possible. But I cant seem to get rid of the Permissions and CD write restrictions since I am the only person who uses or even has access to this computer. About the only thing I like about XP verses 98/ME is the stability.:bugeye:

Uncheck "read only" in your folder properties.

After clicking Apply, OK it just goes back to "Read only."
