I think it depends on the purpose you use your system for. The best idea is to have a 2 OS system.

yumyum

Windows is definitely better, but way over priced. Microsoft is an oppressing monopoly.

Windows is a Closed source, while Linux is Open source.

The difference is where in closed source a Company creates the operating systems and programs and controls the licensing of others to participate in the creation of programs.

In certain respects if there are faults they are at because the company is following profit and doesn't allow source code to be freely distributed.

The arguement here is that a company with multiple numbers of shareholders is more likely to be trying to obtain maximum profit, with total disregard to quality, as long as they achieve their profit and their beancounting is right.

Where as Open Source allows projects to exist with multiple programmers, the programs are written perhaps still with time limit but they aren't budgetted by a company backing and not controlled by worry about market shareholders.

If you take a look for instance at www.debian.org you'll find information on how the project has increased in size from when it first started, rather than having just a handful of coders there are now thousands who find faults, report them, recode them and patch.

Thats why there aren't too many viruses or trojans for linux systems, because most of the people that choose to code for linux and depressed because they can built pieces for the system to make it work better and get individual credit, where microsoft suffers due to their Code hogging, where people aren't happy because they can't debug the system themselves and add to any project.

Perhaps MS would get back on top if they ran an OPEN SOURCE project with a new OS.

Windows is better at 4 things:

1. Games (better selection)
2. Getting infected with viruses
3. Crashing
4. Losing data (see 2 and 3)

I have no virii on my Windows XP machine and my machine has never crashed, nor lost data. I have my page file on a separate partition; my OS files are on a separate partition, and i have a couple other partitions. My computer fully boots up in under 40 seconds. I'm running an Athlon Tbird 1.2 Ghz with 512 MB DDR RAM.

I play games, use Microsoft Office, and keep in touch with my friends through Trillian. I also like to listen to music.

For me, Windows is the best choice. Probably for most of you, too.

If you like command line hacking then you use *nix, otherwise Windows.

Personally I use Windows ME for word processing and spreadsheets etc. But *nix for programming.

Well all I can say is that I hope tomorrow goes as well for you as today obviously has.
Did you install the service pack that gives MS the right to peruse your harddrives and install and delete files at their convienence?

I personally don't have an objection if MS is using spyware because it's not being used against me yet....yet. I really agree that the prices for any Windows is way too much...Windows 98se is about $200 at Staples and $80 if you look for it on the web...$80 for an OS that is 7-8 years old?

My windows XP has crashed only once...and it was right after installing it because the drivers for the graphics didn't like XP, but after the drivers, not one crash.

It boots up in about 15 seconds to the multiuser screen, then about 25 seconds for everything in your settings to load. One thing that I would like to see improved is when you leave someone logged on with your account, it decreases speed and everything drastically.

As for viruses...as long as you have an up to date virus program, you'll be fine...I use Norton Corperate 7.0, got it from my brother's college :) Updates for the virus checker takes about 2 min to do. It works like a charm.

Games are not a priority for me, but I love Word, Access, and Excel. I wouldn't change from MS because it would too long to learn how to use another OS and tinker with it.
