"But history, real solemn history, I cannot be interested in... I read it a little as a duty, but it tells me nothing that does not either vex or weary me. The quarrels of popes and kings, with wars or pestilences, in every page; the men all so good for nothing, and hardly any women at all -- it is very tiresome" -- Catherine Morland in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (1817)

Well said Catherine as men still think playing army is a sport and that lives are meaningless. Men commit 97 percent of the worlds violent crime. If we study wars for the last 4500 years we will find at least 97 percent of them were caused by men. Men have a way of changing things and have since the early days. Telling us that they are to rule over us and we should sit in the back of the church and keep our mouth shut *shrugs*
    Genesis 19 30-34

Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger. "Our father is old, and there is no man around here that will lay with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Lets get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father". That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. Then the next day the older daughter said to the younger, "last night I lay with my father. let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can perseve our family line through our father. Gee men can stoop low huh. Rape their daughters and claim I was asleep and it was for God's will.

Thought I would throw that in to stop all of you that will feel lead to say men are to rule over us as the source of your comment is by men like this. Men are much more aggressive than women a fact that has been the subject of study.

James Dabbs, Jr., studied 4,462 men in 1990 and found that "the overall picture among the high-testosterone men is one of delinquency, substance abuse and a tendency toward excess." These men, he added, "have more trouble with people like teachers while they are growing up, have more sexual partners, are more likely to have gone AWOL in the service and to have used hard drugs," particularly if they had poor educations and low incomes. A separate study by Dabbs of young male prison inmates found that high testosterone levels were associated with more violent crimes, parole board decisions against release, and more prison rule violations. Even in women, Dabbs found, high testosterone levels were related to crimes of unprovoked violence, increased numbers of prior charges, and decisions against parole.

The latest study by Dabbs et al., which pooled data from two groups of prisoners, measured testosterone levels in the saliva of 692 adult male prisoners. The researchers found that inmates who committed crimes of sex and violence had higher testosterone levels than inmates who were incarcerated for property crimes or drug abuse. In addition, they say, "inmates with higher testosterone levels... violated more rules in prison, especially rules involving overt confrontation."

Dabbs et al. say that "the variety of rule violations suggests the behavior of high testosterone individuals reflects intractability, unmanageability, and lack of docility as well as aggression and violence."

"Testosterone, crime, and misbehavior among 692 male prison inmates," James M. Dabbs, Jr., et al., Person. individ. Diff., Vol. 18, No. 5, 1995. Address: James M. Dabbs, Jr., Dept. of Psychology, Georgia State University, University Plaza, Atlanta, GA 30303- 3083.

Testosterone Linked to Violence in Female Inmates

ATLANTA, GA. -- September 23, 1997 -- Higher testosterone levels are related to criminal violence and aggressive dominance among women in prison, says a Georgia State University study released today.

The study, published in the September-October issue of Psychosomatic Medicine, measured testosterone levels in 87 female inmates at a maximum security prison. Their criminal behavior was scored from court records and their prison behavior was assessed from prison records and staff interviews.

The researchers found that testosterone levels were related both to the violence of the women's crimes and to the aggressive dominance of their behavior in prison. This finding was further supported by assessing how an inmate's age corresponded to her behavior and testosterone levels.

As the hormone level decreased in older prisoners -- testosterone declines with age -- so did the aggressive dominance. But the study concluded testosterone, not age alone, was the significant factor; older inmates who had high hormone levels were not less aggressive or dominant.

"The key to this study is it shows testosterone is linked to dominance in both criminal behavior and behavior in prison," said Dr. James Dabbs, a professor of psychology at Georgia State University and lead researcher on the project.

The findings, by Dabbs and Marian Hargrove, are similar to those in studies of male prisoners. This indicates testosterone's effects on behavior are the same in women as in men, Dabbs explained. Testosterone levels were highest among male inmates convicted of violent crimes such as rape, homicide and assault. These men also violated more prison rules.

An intriguing observation from the study on women was discovered when prison staff members were asked to describe the five inmates who were lowest in testosterone. The three staff members used phrases like "very manipulative" and "sneaky," but all agreed the word "treacherous" best described the women.

This doesn't mean having low testosterone is trouble, Dabbs said. However, in a specific population, such as prisoners, this type of negative, underhanded behavior might be expected from those who lack other elements of power such as the aggressive dominance seen in those with high testosterone, he said.

The study's findings indicate testosterone plays an important role in the female criminal population, but variables such as age, social factors and other hormones must also be considered, added Dabbs.

There have been many reports of steroid users demonstrating violent behavior. In many cases, this behavior was uncharacteristic of the individual's typical behavior when not taking steroids. While it is difficult to establish that a specific violent act is a direct result of steroid use, there is a growing body of evidence which suggests such a connection. In addition there have been formal studies which found a strong correlation between steroid use and increased aggression. There have been a number of legal cases where steroid use has been introduced as a mitigating factor for a violent crime.

As you see it just isn't me venting while I admit I am upset this weekend and have taken it out on some of you and for that I am sorry. But after 4500 years of wars on earth and men still thinking it's right and we are doing the world a favour by having wars, I think it is time to reverse it. Isreal and Palestine should be all of the proof any of you need to realize wars just cause more wars. It will never stop..Until someone writes the Book the "Fall of the American Empire"

All through history empires or world powers have shifted. The lessons of history teach us well that a doctrine of war will stop an empire. The larger the empire becomes, the more money and men are needed to support the empire, and the more the rest of the world will rally to stop the advance. History teaches us that education plays a key role in having your own empire. Bush is scaring me and we are losing more and more world support because of his actions. If things progress as it looks we will attack another country and lose more world support. He is talking about attacking several more countries. Yeah I agree our Army is the best in the world. But at one time so was the Roman empire. (27 BC to the fall of Rome in 476 AD) AT one time the Persian empire had the best army in the world.(5500 BC to 529 BC when a war killed most of their Army) The Ottaman empire(1300 to 1571 when it's fleet was destroyed) Hitlers Empire had the best army of the world( 1933 to 1945) No one in history has been able to hold onto their empire using war as a tool. Education is the most important part of an empire. The Soviet Union brings this message home clearly 1917 to 1991) I agree we could debate what caused the fall of any of these empires all day long and how we are not on the same path but Our school system was the best in the world when I was a kid growing up. It's one of the worst in the world now. It's under funded and the morals of our society lead by the Christian and Catholic Churches is saddening. The morals of any Asian country is TONS better. Their schools are under funded too but their children are taught to learn and respect people and a "poor" student is almost unheard of there. Yes we have more money and we give people a better chance to express new studies but those countries are no longer in the back seat. If we keep spending money on war and weapons and allow our schools and children to fall apart, our empire will fail and history proves it. Only peace will give us a chance but truthfully if we don't increase funding to our schools our empire will fall.

Thank you for the enlightening history lesson and the evils of testosterone was quite informative. Is war really a gender issue or a human issue? War has been used in history, normally to better one's country for selfish reasons, granted. Why would women make better leaders?

Hmm, I don't know about all women being passive. I've met some loony tunes in my time, but a sexy female president would be a nice change instead of old gnarly dudes.

I just don't know about the whole world living in traquility. It is just speculation, but I don't think anything would change. Men or woman leaders would carry on with business as usual.

  12. The thing is....

Women only get into power if they act like men (just look at Margaret Thatcher).

If we act like women, we don't get a chance. The only way we can break through the glass ceiling is if we act as ruthless as men do. I heard about a study which found that the more powerful a woman becomes, the more testosterone she produces.

One day this will change, and women will be free to occupy positions of power without sacrificing their womaness in order to act like a man.

But, however, I do agree with you somewhat. Men tend to be alot more competetive by their very nature. It's that whole territory thing, a survival mechanism left over from the stone age.

Women on the other hand are less prone to the whole chest beating thing. The thing is, more women in power would be alot more balanced for a start.

Several times during the course of this war, I've heard Bush make statements and stuff, and it's like this whole thing is just a "my nuke's bigger than your nuke" scenario. As if everyone's just trying to prove who's the bigger, more macho man, only on a global scale. In this case, more women in power would definately be a good thing......'cos we prefer to get on with life than prove ourselves all the time

Haha now we are on the other side of the fence Io Aurelia tell me that cleopatra wasn't a good ruler who used what god gave her to her advatage and the advantage of Egypt

  14. Of course. The only reason why Eqypt didn't become a Roman province for so long was because Cleopatra was screwing Caesar and Antony.

But you have to look at the situation for women then, the only way they could have any power whatsoever was through a man. These days, things are different. We can now hold power in our own right, and don't have to use our feminine charm if we don't want to.

what about that queen of england (her name always escapes me but i was watching a show about it the other day) or Henry 8th's (think hes the one who choped of heads) children. First one queen killed the prodestants then the next killed the catholics.

I have nothing against having women in power but i think its the quality of the person (something which little Johny lacks) not there gender

I would LOVE to see Natasher as our PM i think she would be EXACTLY what our country needs (no one but you and me is going to know who she is but thats ok because its only aimed at you anyway)

  17. I think the point is not so much that we are completely perfect and would create world peace if we took over (who said anything about taking over anyway?), but more about balance.

We *do* tend to have slightly different priorities than men, and we tend to view the world in a different way. If there were more women in power, the least it would do would be to create a more balanced system.

And yes, I do agree that it's the quality of the person rather than gender, if someones a crappy governer, it doesn't matter what sex they are. But I still think that it wouldn't do society any harm to have an equal amount of women and men in power.

And yeah, Natasha seems like a better choice for PM than Johnny, that's for damn sure. It's just too bad that the demos (or labour for that matter) didn't get enough support. Either of them would have been better. Now we have to put up with Johnny for another four years

Are you kidding? I've been couped up in a base camp for six months, surrounded by tall fences( think of a jail). I forgot what beer tastes like. They only excitement we had is when binladen sent some of his terrorists to Bosnia to kill us. Of course they were caught right away. Would you believe they were going to crash planes into our camps. Thats what you get for being stuck in a muslim country trying to promote peace with the christians. But I do have the internet, that GOD!:bugeye:
