View Full Version : why i posted in word threads
spuriousmonkey 03-17-03, 02:26 AM closure of word threads:
*Due to a consenus of the mod's, this thread and others of simular nature will be closed. They serve no purpose but to take up bandwith and seem to be used by certain posters to rack up posts.
wet1*
i would disagree on this, because for me it is just entertainment. And a nice way to practice language.
But if you all agree that you don't want them then that is the way it is. That's life.
I justed wanted to list my personal reason for posting in these threads.
everneo 03-17-03, 04:39 AM Word threads eatup large bandwidth. That could well be the reason. But can't say completely pointless, it is fun. If someone wants to increase his score he can spoil other threads aslo. The average posting rate for word thread might be around 30 per day.
Btw, Vagina was closed and it took with that word threads also before it closed.
Within 24 hours and with more than 80 posts and 5 pages it far surpassed word threads by posting rate. If i feel to have horny chat i would go to XXX forums and discuss vagina of all types. I hesitated to do this in sci-forums cuz i get really nasty... sorry about word threads being a collateral damage to vagina.

Spurious , you should be a mod, with such empathy, goodwill, no derogatory remarks, a complete good egg!.....not even a hint of malice or negative thought, not one thought for the self, a real gentleman and a scholar...the only bandwith your in is in harmony with mankind!
Dr Lou Natic 03-17-03, 08:13 AM Word threads did kind of annoy me, they weren't that bad, just disappointing when you think a real thread is being replied to only to find out someone typed a word or 3 in one of those threads. I don't see what the problem was with that vagina thread.... besides the fact that beth has a hairy vagina, that is a problem, a serious problem indeed:(
IXL, I like spurious too but don't you think you're laying it on a little thick:bugeye: people might start talking...

SwedishFish 03-17-03, 10:04 PM he's got my vote
this whole closing of threads thing worries me. if it was taking up too much bandwidth sure, but closing the vagina thread was uncalled for. i find it offensive that vaginas are called offensive. now who gets banned??? my feeling on forums is that if a thread is popular, the users want it to be there. if it is a worthless post, it'll eventually fall off the front page and could quietly be deleted. exception: flooding. otherwise it's just tyranny.
eddie monkey 03-18-03, 12:31 AM What I don't understand is this site's obsession with the amount of bandwidth availiable. If the administration can't afford a decent amount of bandwith for everyone to post messages, they should shut it down and send us our separate ways. Everyone should be able to post their opinions without being told that they are wasting space.
The Religion forum's "cut and paste" policy is an example of this, and as we have seen, wet1 seems to be obsessed with bandwidth.
Asguard 03-18-03, 02:10 AM right
i dont know about you but i enjoy posting here
i would prefer it not to close down like it did once because dave cant aford it
lixluke 03-18-03, 02:13 AM I think I started a word thread once.
It was like word association, but you would have to use the last letter of the previous word as the first letter for yours.
It eventually withered away.
Oh well.
Regardless, I'm remain neutral on the subject.
I could really care less weather or not they are there.
No big gain. No big loss.

Live within the framework that Porfiry desires or move on. ;)
reformedtopunk 03-18-03, 09:35 AM Mods are mods for a reason. don't argue with them.
"word" posts were stupid. Get over it. 3 word story didn't even TELL a story.

How much does it cost to run this site each month? Why doesn't Dave allow one or two other members to become "shareholders" in the site if he's having so much trouble paying for it?

Why should anyone come to this board when they are contantly told they are wasting space?
"Three Word Stories" and their ilk are not opinions, nor is cutting and pasting a thousand words of someone else's work, as is often done in the Religion and WE&P forums.
Still, our freedoms are being limited. What's the purpose of having a board if you can't post as you please?
As you are not paying for that bandwidth yourself, or even contributing towards offsetting the cost, you should not be worrying about it. Live within the framework that Porfiry desires or move on. ;)
Sounds like what the Vietnam War protesters were told. "Sciforums, love it or leave it!"
Instead of bitching, you could help out with the cost. Nothing comes for free, certainly not this site. Porfiry has kept this site running for a long time. It has come out of his pocket during this time. He is a student.
The 2.99 he asks is not budget breaking in any sense of the word. It is us the users that make it expensive. Done your part to help? You have no avatar, so that answers that, so what are you bitching about? If you don't vote, you didn't have a say in an election either...
There has been an increasing thought that the internet is free. It never was. Prehaps you should ask your provider to give up his fee to allow you access. I dare say that your access would be terminated if you failed to pay on time.
This was never the "Land of the free" and if you got that impression then you need to make your own site where your rules are the guiding light. If it is successful, then I think you will understand on a more personal level exactly what the problem is.
You should visit some of the other sites and find out exactly what moderation is. This site is not bad, believe me. In fact the times that moderation occur are reason for a huge amount of comment, witnessed by this thread, devoted to the closure of some threads. Why? Because it is not that often that it happens. It has been more active in the last few months than ever before. The idea that anything can and should be posted is not what goes here and it never did. You agreed to follow some rules to become a member of this board. Did you just sign and forget them? If so, then I would imagine the world will fall in on you one day, if you ever take out a loan.
Several of our members forget this is a family forum. That some subjects are not to be discussed in a down and dirty fashion. It was the reason for the closure of the vigina thread. A little too graphic folks. We are not looking for lawsuits by some unhappy parent.
There is one other thing that needs answered here. Banning doesn't come out of the blue. Those that are banned either knowingly do what they know that is not acceptable or have time to amend their ways. Just because a thread is closed does not mean a member is up for banning. Those that are up for banning get a pm, most times several, in an attempt to keep the member.

It's not really the price but method of payment that might bother some people. I don't like the idea of giving credit card numbers out on the internet, or bank cards, or any other sensitive information of the such. Is there any possible way to pay in cash?
And how do you know I did not give a 2.99 ($3, even Porf uses the .99 trick) and just don't have an avatar?
I personally, never used a credit card in payment. So you will have to come up with another excuse. That you are giving excuses speaks for itself.

And you paid with ___________ (fill in the blank)?
Personal check. It could have also been money order. All of this is in site feedback, including the postage from the US and the address to send it too.
Pollux V 03-18-03, 01:36 PM If you want to know, I was the one who originally advocated the closing of the word threads. Myself and others noticed how they exhibited no intelligence behind the posting, how some posters (I shall use examples if you wish) never posted anywhere else, and how there was little self autonomy involved. They were not funny (trust me, I'd laugh). They were a waste of space and time and seemed to imply that this forum was created for chatting rather than somewhat more of intellectual conversation.
So, I'm sorry. Also, I'd just like to mention that I do pay for my avatar and quote, even if I am a moderator.
i think you were a banned troll

It is essentially the same here. All decent credit card companies have a liability limit for the cardholder. And how do you know I did not give 2.99... and just don't have an avatar?Because you are a "Bum/student/hedonist." ;)

eddie monkey 03-18-03, 02:49 PM Fine. I'll look into the money order stuff. Is the 2.99 a monthly fee or does it cover members permanently? If permanant avatars, sigs, and statuses come for $3, then the deal isn't bad at all.
goofyfish 03-18-03, 03:24 PM Per month.

let's hear it then...who?
and humor is not the same for everyone...i had to laugh a lot with the 3 word story, especially if i was writing with IXL777...
i can also remember the last time i was in a conference in the states and at the dinner party the american hosts made jokes...all americans laughed...all europeans remained silent..
edit: typo

look, you mods have basicaly bullied this guy into paying for stuff like that, i think its a bit unfair, i also think that, for some reason or other, the mods are starting to become distant and slightly out of touch with the majority of the people posting on these boards!?
goofyfish 03-19-03, 06:29 AM If true, I guess I would attribute that to the majority of the posters
becoming distant and out of touch with original intent of this forum.
:m: Peace.
Pollux V 03-19-03, 06:33 AM I'm sorry, but three words per post cannot be compared to the better intellectual endeavors that have gone on here and will go on here. Would you speak of the news or science with a friend in three word bursts? No, because there would be little correlation in the conversation.
Dr Lou Natic 03-19-03, 06:41 AM Maybe a "9 word story" thread would have been better. You guys think you liked 3 word stories but you don't know the joy of nine:cool:
TO THE "NEW THREAD" BUTTON!!!!
just kidding....

Intellect can be explained in a few words..its only to people who are a bit thicker that it has to be explained..you obviously havn't been reading my input in other threads..i.e Phd's..etc
Intellect and maturity means just that, one either has intellect or not ..

were is your intellectual authority to justify what you have just said!! a forum is a place to chat and discuss subjects with a few words or as many as you like, you have a view of self-grandiose.....
spuriousmonkey 03-19-03, 07:29 AM let us have a look at the oldest thread in free thoughts if things have deteriorated so much recently:
http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13132
therefore:
let us not all start blaming each other and pointing fingers at each other for 'chatting' in this forum, or not discussing topics on a high enough intellectual level. Because we all chat and most of us have an intellectual input in this forum.
Intellect the ability to reason and understand..I take great offence from you goofyfish being personal in your comments..if a doctor of philosophy can't reason and understand ......who can .........you!!!!!
Free Thoughts: random ideas, thought, trivialities..."how many free-thought threads are intellectual......I reached 4,000 posts by Adam!!!!
reformedtopunk 03-19-03, 09:38 AM you all sound like a bunch of babies complaining because your mother took away your binkie....grow up and come up with something more constructive than "3 word story" and maybe you'll be taken seriously. If you don't like the mods decisions, post in other forums?? there are several things you can do, if you think the system in place at scifroums is so bad
a: get over it and deal with it
b: go to another forum
c: continue being irritating to the bane of intelligent members, lose all respect that you may have, and possibly, yes, be banned.
Its up to you at this point.

Punk..I hope you were not referring to me,I don't give a toss about the 3 word thread.....where the hell do you get the authority to utter a load of old bollocks..you only been on this forum for 5 minutes and quote:"continue being irritating to the bane of intelligent members", I happen to have a PhD. IS THAT INTELLIGENT ENOUGH!!!
I would hope there would be some kind of reasonable acceptance on this business of not using free thoughts for a chat room.
There has been some discussion on the level that this forum and the other fora by association has sunk too. It appears that it may be the driving force behind changes. There is not one here that has not heard of the "quality level" dropping comments somewhere within this forum and in other forums. If changes occur, they will not be good for some.
Folks, you rarely hear me speak about banning, unless it is to explain something to a member. But banning is not the only option. There could be major changes coming in the structure of the site itself. As an example, for the purpose of discussion, Free thougths itself could go under and dissappear from this site altogether.
What I am trying to tell you is that banter is not the same as thought. Something, sadly lacking within threads such as the 3 word thread. It's only thought level was how to connect to the last post and that was done poorly.
Now you all continue on with the fussing.
Don't be too sure things will always continue as usual.

WET 1 i AGREE WITH YOU,what I do not agree with is people asuming intellectual authority, when it clearly says on the Free thought section:random ideas, thought and
TRIVIALITIES ..and its no-ones business if you want to be trivial on some of the threads!"where do they assume their intellectual authorities , some of these people are still at school...that is what annoys me!!

I'm not meaning to insult your or anyone else's intelligence. i'm just trying to say i guess that it all seems like crying over spilled milk. this just doesn't seem like something worth getting upset over to me. So, i'm going to stop posting about it. I hope we can all do the same and go back to sci-foruming as usual.
