I find it interesting that (a) you did not vote, and (b) you classify atheism and agnosticism as religion.

RD: Atheism is a religion. However there are many sects.

And I'd like to add that Atheism isn't believing God doesn't exist, nor is it believing God doesn't not exist. It's somewhere in between.

If you think that's agnosticism: no, agnostics believe it isn't relevant or don't care, atheists are pretty sure there is no God but generally don't believe 100% that there isn't one. As don't I.

The credibility of your silly assertion is matched by its clarity.

'That's a great deal to make one word mean,' Alice said in a thoughtful tone.

'When I make a word do a lot of work like that,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'I always pay it extra.'

Thanks for sharing.

I'm an Atheist.

Because evidence of God has never been sufficiently exhibited to me I need not believe in God or religion. Therefore I am free of the sophomoric bounds of religion, able to test and validate the truths that I find and discard the dross. As an Atheist I have happiness, contentment, a sense of place, and values that must meet critical analysis as they are not proscribed to me by some self-proclaimed human authority. I retain the right to evaluate and judge such claims and proscriptions by my own reason and am not hindered by any adherence to dogma. I have no need to twist the truth in order to fit my beliefs because my beliefs are determined by truth and perception and are available to modification as new truths come to light. More importantly, I am able to acknowledge the truth no matter its source.

Knowing that it is unlikely that my personality will survive my death I reject the illusions of the self-satisfied "saved" and focus my effort on myself and the world around me, I accept that my actions are important in the here-and-now. My code of ethics must stand up to my own critical analysis as well as the judgement of others. There are no loopholes, there is no absolution.

Athiesm isn't a religion, simply the lack therof.

(I'm surprised the Christians here haven't voted yet...) :bugeye: :D

As for me....I'm a failure. My mother is Christian, I feel like a pariah at church because of my surface faith, I tasted the joy and I understand the messages, and I saw the disappointment in my mother's eyes when I confessed I wasn't a believer (did she expect me to lie to her, and God?). You're either a Christian, or you're not. No gray area.

are you a failure to yourself or to others?

Sure, both, why not? I disappoint myself, and my Christian relatives and friends.

I can't frustrate any christian relatives because I have none :(
I have very few relatives anyway:)

And no mormons or anybody come to my door to convert me to their religion also:(

I'll have to write a nasty scientific work on the belief system topic (I have to do one once a year- last year it was about Nietzsche:p)

Hey, you should feel relieved that no Mormons/Jehovah's Witnesses come knocking at your door. :D I usually put on an accent, and pretend I don't speak English. :D It works like magic.

What're you going to write about this year?

duno- I have to somehow connect it to literature- because I have to do the work in it. I barely got through Nietzsche.
duno really- maybe latvian mythology- I'm a bit tired of christian nonsense

How about the Greek/Roman gods, and how petty they were? It should be easy, because humans made them up, therefore they reflect human nature. You could make your paper hilarious too, by recounting all of Zeus's exploitations of women. :D

:) No problem.

And you could date the occurences of each myth, connect them with something that happened at the same time in history, and interlink them to show how humans compensate for their misery/happiness/situations. Then, write about the "downfall" in the belief in Greek/Roman gods, and from there, denounce all other religions as a basic human need for the supernatural to explain things. :)

Avatar

myths can't be dated to some historical events (in most cases)-
when myths were created , most likely the writting in that culture wasn't -

btw- I wouldn't write about roman gods, because they are complete copyes of greek gods and are quite uninteresting (roman ones)

Awww...too bad. :) Because that might have been neat way to explore the topic.
