M*W: I will answer this, because you asked a legitimate question. My answer stems from the research I have done on ancient myth. Once again for the gazillionth time, ancient nomads traveled in the cool of the night and rested by day
in the heat. They followed the stars by night making stories about the star formations (constellations) thereby creating myths that are still believed today. I will refer to christianity, since that is the religion I am most familiar with. Christianity today still follows some of those ancient star formations but call it dogma.

During the time the ancient nomads were creating stories about the star formations, I don't think it was for the purpose of creating religions. I believe it was more for entertainment purposes and as a navigation system. Those stories were passed down through the ages and given titles such as Noah and the Ark, A&E in the GoE, Jesus's birth, death and resurrection, and so forth. Somewhere down the line these myths became religious beliefs and are still believed today. It all started with the "logos," or the "study of the stars," which is astrology.
