does vBulletin send some data back to the main vBulletin site?
I got my hands on a copy of it, but don't want my board to be trashed be some legal action
    currently I run phpBB
(and don't start on ethics and the like

I would guess that they may have some sort of spying techniques but I don't think they'd pay that much attention.

I doubt it, but even if they do find out that you're running a not-so-legal copy, they won't care. 3 reasons:

    1) They want people to proliferate their software.
    2) You're in a European country
    3) Costs too much to carry out any real legal action against you.

Its an open source bulletin board software. To Av, I wouldnt chance it, if they did find out they could sue for copywrite even if its unlikely.

I would not use it, it is too prone to attacks.

Seems like quite the conundrum you have there.

Okay, here's the plan. Use the software, at first they'll more than likely request that you desist any illegal activities before taking you to court. It's cheaper for them and then you know your answer. Everybody wins.

That might be possible, true Thor.
I suppose they will warn you off first.

I wouldnt be so sure Thor, the could get alot from sueing, its probably worth their while in the long run just to sue.

    not really
    1. time taken to adjust the forum
    2. there might be some problems at transfering a database back to phpBB later on
    3. I wuldn't have security patch support
    --
blah, I'[ll better stick with phpBB, though it's abit insecure, but I have all the newest patchs and some php code adjustments

If it was your ass would you risk it? I wouldnt to be honest, Ive thought about it but chickened out and used Invisionboard instead. I dont think theres too much of a difference to risk getting legal action.
