My understanding wasn't that they were delaying because the code was permanently gone as a result of the theft. If 1/3 of their code was totally gone it would take much longer than next year to rewrite it all.

Or I could be wrong and that is exactly what happened...but they don't directly say that the code is forever gone and has to be redone :/

Well I don't think the issue is that the code was stolen and then they didn't have it anymore. . . digital theft is always a lot more subtle than that, you generally don't delete the copy of what you are stealing from your mark's hard drive, that's just rude! If this theft really is a factor in the delay it's probably due the fact that they will now be reviewing security, figuring out just what went wrong, and figuring out the ramifications.

They took only a third of the code??

I find that hard to believe. Some of the people at linuxquestions (www.linuxquestions.org) are on the verge of compiling it.

The good news that they've found is that this code show signs of implementation for a linux port! So we'll half half life 2 on linux. Awesome news for the community

It's already been compiled and is floating around on IRC. Basically all it is is walking around in a brick square room. It's nothing fantastic, and it's certainly not enough to put the game back 5 months on it's own (unless of course the code for CD key generating or CD protection needed to be rewritten). The way I figure it, they are just using it as an excuse to extend an unreachable release date.

you're right. It's probably an excuse to delay the release of a bad product.

But THE PRIZE for PROGRAMMERS OF THE YEAR belong to the group from SunnComm Technologies Inc .
