why would you want to waste your time in the cities? they all look the same anyway. you should head out into the natural environment if you want to really see what the country is like.

I think the modern backpacker has changed. As I mentioned in another thread when I went to south america the average backpacker had 1 oversized backpack (which was too heavy to walk around in), a smaller backpack on the front (also stuffed), and a collection of plastic bags with stuff that didn't fit anymore in the other 2 backpacks.

If you looked at the contents of the backpack it usually consisted of party clothes, beach clothes, an assortment of shoes etc.

Basically they used backpacks as normal luggage, and stayed in big cities to party.

Backpacking is often synonymous with an 'unorganized' holiday (as not being organized by a tour operator). The backpack has become a fashion accessory. Of course there are still backpackers out there that actually travel through a country. I just saw more of the beach tourist backpack type.

top 10 worst presidents

1. James Buchanan (1857-1861), for failing to keep the Union together before the Civil War.

2. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869), for failed post-Civil War reconstruction policies.

3. Lyndon Johnson (1963-1969), for letting the Vietnam War escalate.

4. Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921), for refusing to compromise on the Treaty of Versailles after World War I

5. Richard Nixon (1969-1974), for his involvement in a Watergate cover-up.

6. James Madison (1809-1817), for getting the United States into the War of 1812 with Britain.

7. Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), for the Embargo Act of 1807, a self-imposed prohibition on trade with Europe during the Napoleonic Wars.

8. John F. Kennedy (1961-1963), for the Bay of Pigs Invasion that led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

9. Ronald Reagan (1981-1989), for the Iran-Contra Affair, an effort to sell arms to Iran and use the money to finance an armed anti-communist group in Nicaragua.

10. Bill Clinton (1993-2001), for his involvement with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

So what about President Bush's decision to invade Iraq?

"We're going to have to wait a few more years before we can decide where it belongs," said Michael Nelson, a political science professor at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. Nelson added that the decision could end up on a list of good presidential decisions.

"The fact that we don't know shows you how hard it is sometimes to tell how they're going to look with the passage of time. When a president makes a bold decision, it carries great opportunity but also great risk," he said.

That must be a cultural thing because in some countries he would be expected to do that.

That must be a cultural thing because in some countries he would be expected to do that.

The fact that he did it isn't that big of a deal. The fact that he got caught is the bad part. Also, purjury is kind of a bad thing.

Isn't it? ;)

it's pretty bad when the president can't get a blowjob in his house without the entire world knowing about it.

why would you want to waste your time in the cities? they all look the same anyway. you should head out into the natural environment if you want to really see what the country is like. What a strange thing to say. Even I know that backpacking isn't about dutifully going out and seeing the "standard" things that everyone says are wonderful. It's about doing whatever frees your own mind and releases your own endorphins and makes you feel good.

When I was a biker people told me I was supposed to ride my motorcycle out on the open road or through the mountains, experience "freedom." I did plenty of that, but what really made me feel good was riding it to work or to friends' houses or to go shopping. Something about being a little closer to all those familiar molecules.

I'm sure backpacking is the same, different people get different things out of it.

And how disaffected are you from the accomplishments of your species to say that all cities look alike? Right here in a single country, Washington, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Honolulu are about as different from each other as dogs and manatees. Skyline, architecture, greenspace, monuments, store windows, advertising, marquees, street layouts, and that's just the inanimate objects. Ethnic composition, manner of dress, people's expressions, the way they do or don't relate to strangers (or to you).

Then go to a place like Prague, Vienna, Sofia, Venice, or Barcelona.

Immersing yourself in nature is fine if it makes you feel good. But all it tells you about a country is what it was like before civilization arrived with its cornucopia of stimuli. It doesn't tell you much about people and therefore it's somewhat constrained in what it can tell you about yourself, since you're one of them.

top 10 things that annoy me

1. People who point at their wrist while asking for the time. I know where my watch is buddy, where the hell is yours? Do I point at my crotch when I ask where the bathroom is?

2. People who are willing to get off their ass to search the entire room for the TV remote because they refuse to walk to the TV and change the channel manually.

3. When people say "Oh you just want to have your cake and eat it too". Screw off. What good is a goddamn cake if you can't eat it? What, should I eat someone else's cake instead?

4. When people say "It's always in the last place you look". Of course it is. Why the hell would you keep looking after you've found it? Do people do this? Who and where are they?

5. When people say, while watching a movie "Did you see that?" No dicknose, I paid $9.00 to come to the theatre and stare at the frigging ceiling up there. What did you come here for?

6. When something is "new and improved", which is it? If it's new, then there has never been anything before it. If it's an improvement, then there must have been something before it.

7. When a cop pulls you over and then asks if you know how fast you were going? You should know asshole, you frigging pulled me over

8. When people say "Life is short." What the hell?? Life is the longest damn thing anyone ever does!! What? Are they going to do something that's longer?

9. When people ask "Can I BORROW a piece of paper?" Sure, but please don't return the favor! It's one god damn piece of paper!

10. When you are waiting for the bus and someone ask you "Did the bus come yet?" If the bus came I would not be standing here asshole!
