My guess is that your kids listen to that crap because they have no better alternatives at hand. They are probably too young and naïve to look for music they actually like instead of spinning what the radio feeds to them, and that is why you are stuck listening to Slipknot and Green Day with them.

My daughter is three years old and loves the Cure, the Flaming Lips, and Spoon. She also likes Kanye West, which is partially due to the pink and yellow bear on The College Dropout: "Dad, play the purple bear music!"

You are a huge influence on your kids, and I encourage you to use it to everyone's advantage. When good music is played, we all win!

Bands like Slipknot appeal to teenagers for the same reasons that bands like The Sex Pistols did many years ago. It is offensive, angry music that is basically telling the world to go get stuffed. There will always be kids who love that stuff. I just turned 31 and I still love it.

It can be a healthy release of aggression. You do get used to the growling vocals.

Bands like that offer kids the complete opposite of what's in the charts i.e crap soongs about love, sex and depressing things like a death in the family. Slipknot (a band I dispise utterly) is something angry and takes no bullshit.

Thankfully, a majority of kids who listen to Slipknot/Korn/Green Day move on to better bands so you may find that one day they are listening to an old band you particularily like. Slipknot et al seem to be bands for the metal newbies. It's like an initiation band. That's what I've noticed anyway. Thank fuck I completely bypassed that stage. Think my folks are happy about that as well.

Only the ones who stick out do. And they stick out because they listen to that stuff.

I listen to dave matthews, coldplay, james horner, maria schneider and gustav holst.

my roomate listens to everything from musicals to pop and rap (not for musical quality, but to make fun of them), to opera to alternative to concert band.

my neighbors listen to n*sync, briney spears and avril lavigne, and also disney soundtracks.

my other neighbors listen to country.

Out in the plaza for dances they play the dirtiest rap you'd every hear... "work that fucking clit, cum girl, fuck me fuck you fuck everyone" blasted thoughout the whole area. And its a college sponsered event....i cant imagine everyone actually listens to that for music.

    Oh diversity.

I'm 62 and I love today's music almost as much as the music of thirty years ago, which I thought was the Golden Age of Rock and Roll. I've seen Maroon Five, Velvet Revolver, Joan Osborne, Rob Thomas, Filter, and Shakira in concert in the last couple of years.

I haven't heard Slipknot but I love Green Day. "American Idiot" is as much of a concept album as Dark Side of the Moon and you don't have to be stoned to understand it.

If you don't like what the kids are ragging on, it may be because you're part of it. The world really is currently overwhelmed with American Idiots.

    You must seriously be kidding...

I'm no Pink Floyd fan, but American Idiot is a joke.

Death metal is not Slipknot, and vice versa.

    http://www.deathmetal.org/

Some of it is quite good. First three words of that sentence are very important.

It might be as much of a concept album, but it is nowhere near as good as DSotM (this coming from a 19 yo). And you don't have to be stoned to enjoy or understand either of them.

but don't get me wrong, green day was one of the first bands i got interested in and i still listen to them. their music (along with all pop, no matter what period) just isn't as 'deep' as some other bands i listen to. slipknot isn't nearly as talented as most bands out there, even though they do have their own distinct sound. and i'm not really into a band that has 9 people but only uses 5 at a time while the other 4 are beating each other up on stage. i know some people get into that, but its pointless.

but i fully agree with you on that last statement.

American idiot has some good stuff on it, but it won't be selling much thirty years from now...

Introduce them to Guns N' Roses, then you can all enjoy it.

I did use the word "decent", I didn't say "great".
I think they are the best of that neo-80's style (those kids might need to have something their friends have.) It's a lot better than fallout boy and all that other s**t.
