The island of La palma is supposively a ticking bomb ready to collapse and fall into the ocean immediately bring a wave toward the us east coast and washing everything 20 miles inland. I was just watchign a discovery program on it. So what do u all think about this?

I live waaaaay on the other side of the US, but that seems scary. New York City and those other big cities would be destroyed . . . that would possibly crash our economy and government (Washington DC, I believe, is within the red zone). AND it would kill millions of people!

This is on the Discovery Channel? What time zone do you live in? I live in the Pacific time zone. Can I still catch it? I gotta see it.

I saw it last month on discovery and i live on the east coast so u probably missed it but it was real interesting.

It's just one guy's theory. There isn't even much scientific basis for it, other than "it might happen..."

There are lots of things that "might" happen.

I saw this program about a year and a half ago.

Pretty scary thought, since there are presently no warning systems in NY. I don't think even 1% of its 21 million residents know about this. If the west flank of La Cumbre Vieja slides into the ocean, the consequence will be far worse than WTC.

Actually, both sides of the US are vulnerable. Whilst La Cumbre Vieja may be next to slide into the Atlantic, There is a section of Maui's south flank (I think) that's about to fall into the Pacific as well. Los Angeles is in danger as well.

btw I think the program was presented jointly by the BBC and the Discovery channel, and is titled "Megatsunamis"

Actually it's the "Big Island" Hawaii that has the potential of breaking off and falling into the ocean. The "Big Island" has a big crack that has formed on it's south western side.........Some big earth quakes in that region could make it happen.

What is the big island of hawaii? and why has no one ever heard of it.

Including the events in TDAT. Although half of the climatologists says its impossible, the other half says its possible. Although one thing is for certain, that superstorm wont take two or three days to develop

The "Big" island is called Hawaii and everyone who lives in Hawaii or has travelled to to Hawaii for vacation may be aware of this huge crack on the "Big" island. Big chunks of the islands have broke off in the pre-historic past and have caused big super-mega tital waves.

Uhm, I think you guys mean tsunami or "seismic wave" (a wave generated by seismic activity), not tidal wave. Yeah, I know I'm being a bit picky, but the term "tidal wave" gets abused a hang of a lot these days.

Norman
07-08-04, 12:42 AM
No actually I mean "Tital Wave"........If a large amount of land breaks off from one of the islands of Hawaii (It has happened in prehistoric times) and plunges into the ocean, it will displace a huge amount of water, thus creating a monsterous wave that will move across the ocean as tital waves do and when it hits any shore line in it's path, becomes a monster tital wave........

The "crack" that is currently on the Big Island of Hawaii is showing signs of getting wider and longer. Someday the stress from the huge mass on the ocean side of the "crack" will give way and a large portion of Hawaii's south western side will plunge into the ocean creating a monsterous mega tital wave that will travel across the pacific and look out when it hit's the shorelines of other islands in the pacific, Japan, and/or wherever. It's happened before in prehistoric times and it will happen again someday. Who knows when? Your guess is as good as mine!

La Palma is part of the Canaries, in the east Atlantic.

If the Cumbre Vieja were to collapse as one single block, it would lead to a giant mega-tsunami with an initial wave height of 650 metres.
i wonder if some blocks of c4 would help it along. al qaeda may have a new target. current terror alert level: expect shitstorms.

SARS to curb population growth? doesn't that have a 90% survival rate? i mean, it would make sense if the u.s. government unleashed it to take out the baby-boomers, but this? :bugeye:

Of course if SARS is man made they would want it to make it less lethal, just in case their own creation gets out of hand.

This planet is just about overdue for a near-global exinction event. Keep your fingers crossed for the Yellowstone Supervolcano eruption or an asteroid impact. It could happen sooner than you think! If it does happen in the near future, be prepared. Stock up now on McDonalds hamburgers and frenchfries..........

To what extent, and how? Would a tidal wave reach that far?

Norman
07-12-04, 07:42 PM
Depending on the total maount of displacement of the water from the land mass plunging into the ocean, a tital wave could vary in size and stregth from a few meters in height to perhaps a hundred meters or more........Likewise, the same for an earthquake generated tital wave. Generally speaking, the greater the earthquake in magnitude, the bigger the tital wave generated. A good example of a huge ital wave being generated by a volcano erupting or blowing up you might say, was Krakatoa in 1883. It created a tital wave over 100 meters in height that swept over most of Java and surrounding islands, killing over 30,000 or more local inhabitants..........Check it out!

Because the wave would have to diffract around the west side of La Palma, the result would probably generate a wave of similar magnitude to the ones that would strike the east coast of the US. The wave initially generated would be 2000+ meters in height, but as it reaches New York, it would be only around 60 meters in height. Yet still, much bigger than the average tsunami. These figures come from a program I watched on television, and I'm not sure if memory serves me correct. Anyone wanna check?

ive never read any tv show on that but it might be true but ive read it will only wash up like 2-3 miles inland on us east coast? Would that still devistate the us/

Phantom
07-15-04, 09:54 AM
Yes, its true that someday half of USA will go underwater, so will the major cities of Australia that are on the coastline and some countries in Europe.
Scientists have been predicting it, Prophets have prophesied it, but the only question is WHEN.

if the wave is 60 meters tall, that would make it just a bit taller than the statue of liberty. have you ever seen the day after tomorrow? except without all of that freezing and teen angst. :D

I hate movies that make you want to go "10!....9!....8!...7!....6!...um, wait, ok, 7!....6!.....5!...4!...4!....3!...4!....4!....4!.. .2!...3!..2!!.1!! whew, just in time! (sorta)" like day after tomorrow did. Not only were they running, but running through waist deep water, one with a deep leg gash, and the always included "aa! I fell over! i'm not gonna make it! go on without me! well, never mind I'll be ok, let's go."

On topic: is it even possible for the air at the eye of a storm to go down in stead of up? are their any known instances of storms with that sort of structure?

Air does flow downward to some extent but no where as intense as depicted in the movie. Any form of storm is represented by a lower pressure area ... that's what defines a storm ... and the general flow of air is upward through the eye or the center of the storm/low pressure system where the pressure is at its lowest.

If air were to flow downward ... then the moisture which is required to maintain a storm of any size is cut off and thus will result in a weakening of the storm ... which is characteristic of a high pressure system
