Are there any circumstances under which humans could turn into zombies the way we see them portrayed in our favourite zombie flicks? Some sort of virus, radiation, etc. that is anything more than just science fiction?

P.S. George Romero has been given the green light to begin production on a new zombie movie!

Acting would be the best bet. Can't get a better zombie than David Duchovny.

Maybe some kind of necro-experiment i.e. raising the dead.

Maybe something that happens and gives people zombie-like qualities but aren't the undead. Something like a strange sort of radiation poisoning; flesh eating virus that drives you insane; growing old; etc

I have heard there is some drug administered during voodoo rituals that can accomplish such a thing. Oh... here:

It has been claimed that tetrodotoxin is the active ingredient in zombie powder, used by Voodoo priests to induce a death-like trance. According to the hypothesis, the zombie is given just enough tetrodotoxin to incapacitate him or her, then is revived and kept under control by the use of other drugs. However, claims concerning the role of tetrodotoxin in zombification are only weakly supported; the level of tetrodotoxin found in samples of zombie powder may not be sufficient to account for the claimed physiological effects.

Really mad is an understatement. They were more pissed than a T-Rex who had just gotten it's nads caught on a tree stump while suffering from chronic diarrhea
