    It's not exactly right.

    I think a common way to quantise quantum fields is to assume they are confined to volume V and impose periodic boundary conditions. But the last step in the process is to let V go to infinity, which means that in practice the periodicity is then lost and you have a general solution.

    Not gibberish. It is a correct statement.
