Why is thinness in women fashionable?

That is because you are comparing someone who is merely fat to someone who is dangerously thin. More extreme comparisons of thin people to emaciation.

    Look, it works both ways:

I'm thin. To be precise, I have a body fat level of 15.8%. I guess I'm one of your chosen people who have the right to live.

I eat ice cream and cookies at least once a day, not to mention several cans of Red Bull. Long termist? Morally superior?

Um...that curvy woman isn't fat. She is NORMAL.

Please don't ever have a daughter. You would likely cause her to develop anorexia.

She's tolerably plump. Definitely not sexily so, however, if there ever were such a thing.

    Stupidly untrue.

Carrying fat poses a physical disadvantage in an adverse environment. There were no so-called "voluptuous people" in the Paleolithic. We are talking about a nomadic people who were always on the move. Carrying excess mass would only cause more rapid exhaustion. In truth, any extra calories would have been used for muscle building, not fat storing. Leanness was the ideal, not "curvy" or "heavyset" or whatever other euphemisms you want to use in place of being a fatbody.

Um...women are supposed to look like that.

If you're naturally built like a wild cat, that's great, but expecting all women to look like that and morally condemning them for being soft bodied and carrying fat is ridiculous.

I don't see why "unnatural" would be attractive. As I say, this is what we (average people) are bombarded with, not what we necessarily choose. How many average guys would have supermodel posters on their walls? Now how many have, say, page three girls, who have a lot more in the way of curves?
Everybody is different in what they like, and the fact of the matter is the two extremes of being really fat or really skinny, are far more common than the middle ground that most people actually like.

Orleander, how do you think that woman lying on the sofa would fare on a 10 mile brisk walk, as compared to the woman in my image on the first page? Do you think that slovenly slob could even run a mile? Well, when we plop her down on a treadmill and she falls face flat, I think we'll know the answer to that question.

Now, imagine a whole group of those fatbodied women in some kind of nomadic group of homo sapiens in the paleolithic. When we set them on those 10 mile (or more) brisk walks that humans had to go through in order to forage for food, there are two possibilities regarding those women: (1) They'd slow everybody down due to exhaustion, their joints would wear down, and they'd be a complete burden on everyone and be left behind or (2) the constant exercise would rapidly slim them down and all the calories they consume would be converted to muscle instead of pigfat, and eventually their figures would transform into the one possessed by the woman in my first post.

In either situation, the conclusion is clear. Being fat is a physical burden, not an advantage.

You might want to put a timestamp on that opinion. In history, heavier set women were prefered due to the fact that they were more able to give birth to healthy kids.

If you ever been a museum, paintings by Rubens and such...

If I recall the oldest small female statues are incredibly fat women...

Bullshit. First fat women were nursers not the hunters for the tribe, second it helps in survival when food is scarce.

Care to try again?? But anyhow, we are discussing preference, and most men would prefer normal (whatever that is) or slightly curvy women. Buy a Playboy for once...

I was referring to carrying SOME fat for RESERVES, not to being OBESE. Can you not differentiate between the two??

Where is your evidence that being lean was a desirable trait?

Slightly Plump. Not thin, or lean and harsh. Women need that fat for a reason.

My mother is what you would probably call fat.

She can run for like 45 minutes on a treadmill at speeds that cause me to come close to passing out, and be only slightly out of breath afterwards.

Are you sure you have? Take a look at the women of the 80's, where we can view such women as the lovely Raquel Welch?

There are more too, Donna Edmondson, Anna Clark, Dorothy Stratten, Linda Blair. Look at that, all you buffalo out there. Beautiful, *slim* women with narrow waists and perfect breasts and asses. Now, what did we have on the other side of this debate? Ah yes, the non-existent fatties of the Paleolithic and a slobette lying on a couch.

That is an opinion article, not a research article. It also goes against basic common sense. Why do those articles not actually provide any scientific evidence to support those theories, then? If natural selection favored fatter people, why were there so many less than now? At what time period did lean people die younger? How lean are we talking about? Exactly which genes are responsible for this supposed predisposition? Does that article have any use at all? Or did you just google "desperately seeking validation for fat people" and pick the first quasi-fitness site you saw written by an apologetic no-name woman writing about and trying to justify her own lifelong saga of self-inflicted blubber?

As opposed to the purpose of insulting all healthily slim women by calling them emaciated, or "bags of bone," or "not real women?" I don't know Orleander, what do you think?

These playboy women I've depicted are as real as women can get. They're babes to boot. I know where the insults directed as these lovely ladies comes from, however, and I think it's very clear what is missing from the lives of the women who launch those insults.

So does thin, buxom 1987 Playboy girl Anna Clark.
    (note: slight nudity)
