Just a bit to catch you up?

Give me a good reason to call this the Patriot Act. Patriots enjoy unprecedented wiretaps, internet eavesdropping, and the fear of sedition? Give me assurance the privacy of innocents will not be invaded. Give me a reason not to read The Crucible again.

Note: East Germany in the 1960's/1970's had a similiar "Patriots Act," however, they enforced it with an AK-47 up your ying yang and used no vaseline!

How about this little known proposal:

    http://www.globalsecurity.org/org/news/2003/030520-tia01.htm

The embryonic LifeLog program would dump everything an individual does into a giant database: every e-mail sent or received, every picture taken, every Web page surfed, every phone call made, every TV show watched, every magazine read.

All of this -- and more -- would combine with information gleaned from a variety of sources: a GPS transmitter to keep tabs on where that person went, audio-visual sensors to capture what he or she sees or says, and biomedical monitors to keep track of the individual's health.

Thank God I don't live in the USA!

Propaganda for the government to make you think it is a good thing while they err, "reorganize" some of your Constitutional rights.

the patriot act was passed soon after 9-11, so soon that in fact some(probably most) of the people who voted for it didnt even have time to read the whole thing before passing it. Without a propagandish name, no one would vote for it ey? we put a lot of faith in our leaders ey? EY?! run away now =)

The biggest joke is the way they slap huge sentences or fines on you for the most unfounded or illogical "terrorist acts" and terrorise you *ask anyone who's been attacked or held by the police in the USA recently in how they treat you if you even hint at not agreeing with the war on terror* and then give you a way out if you incriminate someone or give evidence on Terrorists.
Given even your Capital punishment system is like this that so many people get off death by incriminating some other poor bastard with false or blatnatly bad testemony yet it is taken usually against some innocent to the point many judges are declaring the system "Broken" now not only did they sweep THAT report under the carpet and not fix it they want to do the same to the Patriot act and let people give the worst or most contradictory and illogicl evidence, say anything to get off easy and incriminate some poor bastard, this is going to go to shit very quickly.

Youve already got immigrants, some of which or just poor and scared and don't speak english giving what sounds like incredably detailed evidence on so and so re terrorism and weapon stock piles and even WMD???? and they take this andd tout it as proof that there are terrorists coming in to the USA and many already here etc etc...and even act on some of it spreading the problem, arresting and harrsing more people who in turn incriminate someone else to "get off easy"
These people the way they are treated would tell you that Santa clause was suppling Scud missiles to Muslim immigrants every christmas and the easter bunny was giving Anthrax eggs around March if you asked them to ffs.

OK, you've got a web site? Check if you've never put potential help to terrorists... else you could get in jail for a long time... until you're shown to be innocent. Mr Ashcroft would like to have a total power upon everyone. What a good news

Why? Because the Patriot Act gives more control to the government and takes away form the citizens? Much like the left likes to do with communism and fascism?

Because it sounds like you're criticising a republican policy put in place to "ensure the safety of US citizens". Yeuch. Even typing that makes me feel like I need a shower.

I notice that Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, Rummy and Senator Jose LIEberman just returned from their long trecherous mission to Baghdad--with their tail feathers all but shot off--as part of their baptism of fire, LOL!

Do you know the meaning of free speech? Since when is it forbidden for me to critisize my own government?

This isn't Europe you know, where the police would force an individual to repaint his car because he wrote "the government is crap" on it. We actually do adore free speech.

No, we've been over this millions of times, fascism and nazism has more in common with left-wing beliefs than right-wing beliefs. Do you know what Nazi stands for? National SOCIALIST party. Yay. Guess what... The Nazis created medicare (krankenkrieg), expanded the government, banned hand guns, nationalized the banks and in general the "people" had more rights than the individual. Does that sound like a right-wing government for you? Let me think... NO. I'm pretty right-wing, and I'm all for a teeny weeny government. If I want to become more extreme, I forsee me being an anarchist. NOT a Nazi. If you want to put nazism and fasism on the right, pray tell where is the anarchists and the libertarians? In the middle? lol. No.

Do you know the meaning of sarcasm?
That incident happened in germany. You may not realise it, but germany is no more Europe than Canada is North America...
No, you are incorrect. Fascism is a right-wing, authoritarian governmental system.

Do you understand that the name doesn't determine their policies? That the socialist part of the German Workers Nationalist Socialist party means as much as the word "patriot" in patriot act...
We've discussed this before Jerrek. The Nazis did not invent krankenkrieg, that was invented by Bismark, about 40 years before Hitler came to power. Before he was born, in other words.
Actually, it sounds like the perfect model of an authoritarian government.
    See, that's not right-wing. That's libertarian.
And we've been over this as well.

Yes we have been over this before, and we've argued this to death. Fact is, you can say a dog is a tree all you want but it is still a dog. I'm a right winger, and I tell you now that nazism and fascism is not on my political side of the spectrum. We were not talking a 2D scale, we were talking 1D. Get it? 1D. For more information, please consult Ayn Rand. She has some excellent books. And before anyone tries to say that she knows shit, let me tell you that she actually lived under in the U.S.S.R. and probably knows more about socialism and liberalism than most of us here.

I wish you'd learn that lesson yourself sometimes...
No, we are NOT talking a 1D scale. In point of fact, even the 2D chart is a simplification - if human politics could be represented by a point on a 2D plane in it's entirity, we'd be a rather simple lot. The thing is, saying that there's only the left-right axis is saying that the sum totality of the variation in human politics is decided by the seating positions of some dead french politicians form a few hundred years ago.
Apart from the fact that her books are horrendously bad, both in writing and content, there's the curious idea there that you learn about socialism and liberalism from living in a totalitarian state that never exhibited any of those qualities. And that's without ever going near objectivism, which frankly is one of the more inhumane philosophies I've ever come across, and which has as much acknowlegement of reality in it's tenets as you'll find in a NASA report on the social and psychological aspects of sex in long-term space missions!

Then, buckwheat, we are not arguing about the same thing. Go argue with a brick. I'm talking about a 1D scale, not a 2D one.

The testimony followed a sometimes withering report released Monday by the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General that found "significant problems" in how law enforcement officials treated some of the 762 people detained after the Sept. 11 attacks on visa and other immigration violations. Nearly all were deported, but only a few were charged with crimes.

The 198-page report found lengthy delays in processing suspected terrorists; the average detention was 80 days, and some dragged on for six months. Only about 60% were charged within an immigration goal of 72 hours. Often, people were denied access to lawyers, limited in their ability to communicate with friends and outsiders.

"Surely, no modern prosecutor in modern history has been granted as much power as you now hold," said Rep. William D. Delahunt (D-Mass.). "You said in your statement we must not forget that our enemies are ruthless fanatics But the solution is not for us to become zealots ourselves."

I thought I was arguing with a brick. Jerrek, if you want to use your 1D scale, go ahead, it's your brain. But if you expect the rest of us to use it, you'll have to justify that scale - and it's just too inaccurate for anything other than propaganda.
