I'd like to help, but I don't even understand the question.

Why do scientists bet? Do you mean, 'bet', as in formulate theories that seem to correspond to the evidence? Because that's a way of betting--laws are a description, and they might be wrong, but scientists would be willing to bet that they are correct due to probability.

Or, do you mean real-life betting, such as gambling?

or do you mean that scientists know how to win a bet because they know all the mathematical probabilities and stuff?

Zen ... the odds of winning any bet are never in the gambler's favor. It's how the house makes money. So, I think the question is, "Why would scientists bet, despite knowing better than most that it's throwing money away?" And the answer? I don't know. Something about the irrationality of humans, I suppose.

    HAHA i have the answer.
in this game of betting, the scientists are the betters and the UNIVERSE ITSELF is the house.
therefore, since the house 'always wins' the scientists, in a cunning plan, bet on the WRONG THING, thus resulting in the univerdse taking all their money.
when the universe comes to collect their winnings, the scientsits then SNEAK a LOOK at the real answers, thus being happy and winning the NOBEL PRIZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John you weren't suppose to figure it out so fast!! How could you?!?!? You were suppose to let me bathe in my newly generated ego...but even so, use this new found ability with care! With great power comes great responsibility!

I ment that they bet if their hypothesis is true. But nevermind, I've figured it out: Modern science is built on inductive conclusions, and they are mostly only possible but not certain (still very possible). Almost in every sciencetific law probability is present, and you have to make a new concusion on ... let's say 10 laws of this kind, so you can't never be certain until you conduct the empirial check... Does this makes any sense?
