Every year I go whole hog on holidays, and there are never enough people to eat it all.

    so far I have made:
    Pecan pie
    pumpkin pie
    pumpkin roll
    magic cookie bars
    mint chocolate pie
    Dutch blanket
    deviled eggs
    cocktail wienies in a blanket
    rolls
    fudge

Tomorrow I will be getting up to make:
    turkey
    stuffing
    mashed potatoes
    yams
    gravy
    meat & cheese tray
    veggie tray
    broccoli cheese casserole.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!? We won't eat all this. :wallbang:

Growing up we had such a houseful and I continue to cook as if there are 15+ people here. Its just the 4 of us. I keep thinking "There are starving children in the world and I made 7 desserts." 7!!

Ech!?! You prepare everything so early? Do you freeze it now to have for Christmas?

I must admit we do the same thing in our household. Only for us it tends to be an over abundance of seafood (Christmas is in summer here and roast turkey, while yummy, is just too heavy for Christmas lunch on an overly hot day). I blame my husband as he is the type to say 'you can never have too many prawns, crabs, lobsters and the rest'... Last year he did the seafood shopping for our Christmas lunch with the family and returned with about 4 kilos of prawns as well as moreton bay bugs, lobsters and crabs, and lets not forget the scallops. Apparently as he was buying it all, it did not look that much in the store.

Damn idiot thought 15 people would actually eat that much.

Lets just say I will be the one doing all the food shopping for Christmas this year.

It may sound like a lot, but desserts can keep. I remember once we made a turkey with stuffing, corn bread, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, apple pie (with dulce du leche ice cream), banana bread, a salad in the shape of a miniature Xmas tree, a fruit and cheese tray.

We demolished most of it on day one (4 of us) and the rest on day two. Of course, we slept through the weekend (nah not really).

I hate pumpkin pie, but its tradition
Pumpkin roll is my son's favorite
Mint chocolate pie is my daughter's favorite
Pecan pie and magic cookie bars are my husband's favorite
My mother in law always brought Dutch blanket, so I make it out of tradition
and the fudge, well, I just wanted to.

well, extra turkey goes into sandwiches mostly. I'm gonna try and make turkey tetrazzini. Mashed potatoes turn into salmon potato cakes. That's about my list of changing something into something else

I will have vegetarian turkey with vegetarian gravy. Actually that would be tofu and wheat with hyrolyzed soy for flavoring so it tastes like turkey. Something to that effect..

are you gonna sculpt a turkey out of a monster block of firm tofu?, seriously you should just make a decent vegetarian dish instead, i would rather just have a plate of beansprouts.

    peace.

It's for lots of reasons. Maternal instincts; Westerners are greedy and eat too much; Christmas no longer has any spiritual value for most and has become a celebration of consumerism. No doubt there are many other reasons.

Dunno. I have no idea what Thanksgiving is. It's probably just an excuse to eat, I expect. Why are you shouting at me?
