You were a kid. Kids do things like that because they are, by definition, immature, ruled for the most part by their moods/impulses, and not wise enough to consider why they should do something. It doesn't mean you deserve to be beaten up.Would you beat the shit out of a child of yours?

Actually Polish guys (one of my friends is) smile a lot if they are with friends. They appear a bit cold to people they do not know. In fact, if they know (and like) you, they are an extremely cheerful crowd (especially when the vodka gets passed around).

Most people from the former communist blocks do not smile much.

Not necessarily, but the alcohol helps.

Not that I'm particularly aware of.. some people do, most people don't.
But not very often with strangers.
    The vast majority shakes hands.

There is a huge difference between a couple of smacks in the ass, and beating the shit out of someone.

Obviously, my parents never intended to hurt me, the intended to educate me

I was there when I was around 9 yrs old. We went there from Germany. I can tell you once we were there for about a week, I wanted to go back to Germany. I wanted to go back to the bakeries and hang out at the Beer Tents again. It wasn't that the ppl were miserable but the FOOD....not a lot to what I was used to back then. One of my relatives back then, didn't feel the need to buy toilet paper either and had newspaper

You apparently went there when they were communists. Now that they have free market, you should be able to find something a little more decent.

No they are not ... I have a polish friend who frowns a bit while he's drinking as to how the world is going down the drain ... But he's the most jovial guy i have ever met on or off drinking circuit. Its just a too generic statement to make.

Thats like saying all Indians speak the same way as couple of cab drivers do in NYC (no offense intended ... Just giving an example of wrong stereotyping ).

In fact now that i think about it, most of the polish friends i have are radically different personalities as you'd expect apparently ... there's no obvious reason to stereotype.
