Seriosuly, why do people seem to hate them so much? What do they do that people dislike so much? Are there any of them that are particularly nasty? What makes them nasty?

It's the standard reaction to any kind of authority figure.

I was going to say the same thing.
This question actually falls into a wider subject than "message board moderators". It also applies to parents, nannies, police, security guards, bouncers, policy makers, and anybody else given the task of "maintaining civility".

Wrong, it's the standard reaction to any kind of authority figure that's oppressive in some way!

To moderate at all is to be oppressive.

Then let me oppress this forum. 25 million East Koreans can't be wrong!

The main problem is that posters tend to use Negative Enforcement.
i.e. "Why are moderators NOT liked?" or "Moderator X has been abusing their power".

quite simply a poster posts something and they get moderated. Rather than the poster actually asking the moderator in question what they can do to rectify their post, they tend to just outright hurl abuse, slander and other discontent at the moderator. Previously we allowed such open complaint threads to be created, however this increased the "negative vibes" across the whole forum, so it was decided to close those threads straight away as a form of damage control.

In essence the atmosphere becomes a far better place without the negative mantra's.

    stryder is right
    i fault perceptions. negative ones
out here in la, a stalled car and a cop providing assistance can back up the freeway for miles.
    speculation morphs into delusion
there is also the issue of cricked necks

    for goddamn nothing

    sci purrs
    90% of the time
if you wanna focus on the 10%
    more fool you

    oh
    mods aint immune either

Stryder makes a great point. Moderators don't have anything to offer as positive reinforcement, so their actions are negative. If we could hand out cookies instead of infractions, the whole system would work better.

You can't generalize not all are hated. So that means they are not hated just because they are mods.
There are many mods here that I don't dislike.

There are some members you can't stand and some mods for the people that they are.

I'd think you'd need both carrots and sticks, really. Co-opting people requires both.

I believe the term moderator is a misnomer @ sciforums (Edit:most forums). Perhaps the title should be changed- the reason i say this is that neutrality is expected in regards to the title of moderator. Perhaps i am wrong.

What about Stryder and Avatar ? They should be in the "Yes" category, or at least in the "Yoe" category

yes. thats just how i typed it so i left it in there.

Also, the reason i say no to the others is due to a seemingly primitive display of pack mentality whereas even if a poster\member\contributor is right in a viewpoint the others come to their defense which, to me, is just not natural or normal. And that is giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Stryder is real cool but he is an Administrator and felt that including him would look like trying to earn ponts, which is not the case at all.

Avatar=Yes (he is still a little young but he is honest)
    James- Admin.=Yes

Ant others i missed i dont know enough about but they seem fine.
