    I call it a draw.

The west had superior technology and tactics.

The east had more people and probably more "will to win" than the east.

Both sides would have been totally depopulated, even without nukes.

They won't ever go that far because there's no profit in destroying everything.

    I dont know.

If you remember in World War 1 the soviets lost so many people that the populace was so angry the government had to give a retreat and a ceasefire to prevent a revolution and anarchy.

A.) only one out of what 10000 U2 missions got shot down? boy 1 in 10000 thats a great track record youve got there

b.) I said the B-2 not the U-2 major difference

c.) No the Soviets dont have stealth technology otherwise they wouldve sold it or used it.

Also remember that it doesnt matter how quiet the soviet subs are once the planes of a carrier start laying down sono buoys with active sonar, those subs are dead.

Also, the soviets only have 1 aircraft carrier and have never used it once.

Um during the cold war they had more than one carrier. They ended up selling one to china.

Not strong on facts are you?

    This one?
    Crap.
    (Wiki)
The cold war ended in '91.
    And they are NOT undetectable.

Correction: they do and why would they sell it?
    The US doesn't.

Well seeing as how most of the soviet fleet was submarines, they would get a few US carriers because they are the largest and most juicy target on the planet that is at sea.

Huh, I thought that they only had one period because they decided it would just be cheaper to use long range fighters.

Im sorry, but for starters the US has stealth planes, F-117, B-2, F-22, F-35.

What evidence is there to show the Russians have any kind of stealth plane?

No offense dude, but once war starts, US naval ships will start using their active sonars like crazy, and their helicopters will be dropping active sonobuoys like crazy.

And thus far there really is practically no countermeasure to active sonar, why do you think torpedos use it?

And two, torpedos are stupid (and im not saying just Russian ones I mean torpedos in general), if you fire a torpedo at a cluster of ship 90% of the time it will hit one of the ships on the outside because they go towards the loudest signal after they enable, which I can pretty much gaurentee (I no i spelled that wrong I just forgot how to spell it.) is not a carrier. And most likely an Oliver Hazard Perry has already dropped their Nixy torpedo decoy which attracts torpedos like a magnet. Torpedos cannot distinguish between a carrier, a frigate, or a decoy or countermeasure, the only way to identify a ship is either hearing their radar signal from your EMS mast (requires being very close to the surface which means you are easy to spot on active sonar) or use a passive sonar array, and of course visually seeing it. Torpedos can only have passive sonar, and even then you need a person to judge which kind of ship it is based on the sound they are hearing and a torpedo cannot do that. Especially when using active sonar at the same time.

So assuming that the submarine can get close to the naval ships (very unlikely), and they manage to fire off a shot, their is pretty much no chance they will hit the carrier.

Yup, an educated guess... 10,000 vs. 23.

    1/23 is just over 4%.

    And?
Look at the costs compared to other types.

Depends what you intend doing to them.
Civilian SSRs (secondary surveillance radar) picked up the SR-71 Blackbird at ranges that really pissed off the USAF when it came to Farnborough in the 80s.

Balls, they can be detected for what they are.

    Stealth plane?
    Nope, stealth system.
Check out plasma stealth for one.
And also check out Soviet/ Russian attitudes to the actual utility of stealth. They have a different view altogether.

If the soviet union were still around today, what would you guys say would be a flash point to start a US Soviet war?

And the range of active sonar is...

    Oooh...
    Error?

There are fewer counter measures against torpedoes than there are against missiles.

    Why use torpedoes?
What about the large stand-off missiles with a couple of hundred km range?

Im sorry to tell you but the Soviets think that since they have never detected a stealth plane and pretty much none of their radars have that they are no threat. For obvious reasons this is not the case

In the end it doesn't matter neither country can afford to operate their carriers.
