1000 Snow Geese Found Dead in NM

    3/15/00 8:55 pm
New Mexico Fish and game is investigating the mysterious death of 1000 Snow Geese Deaths

Roswell --Officials with the state Game and Fish Department are investigating what killed hundreds of geese in southern New Mexico.

An estimated 1000 snow and Ross geese have been found dead just east of here and near the Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge.

Officials said Tuesday the dead geese could pose a health hazard to people and other animals in the area.

"We want to make sure people do no pick these up," Ben Hanson of the state Game and Fish department said of the waterfowl. "Just be cautious around these things."

Hanson said residents should also keep their pets away from the dead birds.

A call from a local dairy farmer prompted the state agency to investigate the deaths.

So far, officials have ruled out disease as a cause of death. They are waiting for more toxicology reports for more clues. The
results are expected in the next couple of weeks.

Even though it's in the Southwest, I think we can rule out hundreds of rednecks. It will be interesting to see what comes of it. Keep us posted, Mana? Pleeeeeeease?

I think there have been other stories about flocks of birds just dropping dead out of the sky. I wonder if they aren't getting sucked up in a major updraft and dying from lack of oxygen, then dropping as the updraft stops?

NO, i dont think so. 1000+ snow geese have died how can the die from wind......hang about they may have got caught in a storm and were suck in and scrambled and spit out, as they were thrown around they could have got killed. Just a thought.

But a disease is more likely.
Again i will try to keep you udated on this story, as i get it.

I've heard of weather being able to suck up a whole school of fish and then rain them down over some inland town.....thats freaky. I don't know how true this story is...I recall it was in a book about abnormal occurances like spontaneous human combustion (too many beans if you ask me

Waterspouts and such have been offered as a possible explanation for fafrotskies (in case you didn't already know, the name comes from FAlls FROm The SKIES), although they have failed to explain why these massive events have never been picked up on radar. They just seem to drop out of nowhere.

When I was in seventh grade, a small stone crucifix beaned me in the head while I was in the middle of an open field. I still have it somewhere. More recently, $2.00 in miscellaneous coinage showered down on me in my own driveway. Hmmm! To quote Red Skelton:

a waterspout does sound like the most logical explanation for the fish falling fron the sky. As for the birds, foul weather or unfortunate air currents would be my guess, too.
