What's the worst thing one can do to hamper one's spiritual advancement?

So, you defered an education to follow your dreams... imagination?

When will you get an education, LG? Based on your reasoning, you're still unhappy, discontented?

actually we both have education (I assume you also got a formalized higher education at some reputable institution) - I was suggesting that your lack of charcater transforms all that you have in the way of knowledge into an abode of obnoxiousness.

Like for instance despite being a great fan of dawkins and bertrand russel, have you ever wondered why they don't slink into ad homs or coarse language - (In case you can't guess, such dialogue is automatically rejected in academic circles - I guess you simply went to uni to get a pay check and have no experience submitting articles for academic scrutiny or public addresses - either that or you post while drunk or for some other reason that enables you to dismiss the normal ettiquette that guides progressive intelligent discussion :m: )

Despite our seemingly fundamental differences LG, I cannot but agree with you here on this point of form. A well-worded and salient point. All too often around here (and particularly within the Religion sub-) people fall into that easiest of fallacy. Naturally, we all fall into it on occasion. But I think the more grave error is to return ad hominem with like.

We could all do with less insignificant attack, and more sound criticism.

Yet, my alleged obnoxious character precludes your fictitious arguments.

Asking when you'll get around to an education is merely a question posed, not an ad hom. Dawkins himself publically recommended those who attend Christian universities to quit and attend a proper university. My statement was similar in nature.

I never went to a christian university - in fact I was practically an agnostic for my entire university education - I got interested in different spiritual ideas when I had almost finished my studies - it wasn't until several years after my studies that I identified myself as a theist.

I hope this satisfies your propensity to ad hom - if you still want to maintain the same attitude and continue berating me with mindless attacks of character I think you will find that my inclination to respond to your posts will diminish considerably.

As one poster responded in a seperate thread, things quickly degenerate into

    "God exists you moron"
"God does not exist you moron"
    "God exists you moron"

One of the reasons I've taken to the eastern philosophy thread is just to get a bit breathing space from mods who bear their editors pen to suit their agenda.

    So anyway .....

hopefully we can get back to the thread

I re-editted the OP earlier with the Q for a definition of spiritual life (if you are an atheist, pretend that you have a spiritual life if you want to offer some workable definiton (as opposed to a sarcastic definition) - hopefully we have just emerged from a sassing cesspool and if you want to re-enter it, there are numerous options available in the religion thread to delight you - there is even one dedicated to sassing me specifically)

Below are few that I think I made,

    1. Reach for spiritual guidance from God - It will let you loose focus and assume imaginary things

    2. Assume elderly people who had been in to a spiritual path for many years have achieved something that they could share – Many I found were more confused than me and wasted lots of my years and hope

    3. Assume a Guru (mere mortals who appear in different flavors) could lead to the light – They can teach you things that definitely help you in your path but not destination

    4. Assume that not having sex or masturbation can help – On the contrary, it spoiled my health and it took time for me to find a person who had done the same and to tell me the bad effects of such a foolishness for me to stop it

    5. Assume that I am a divine being and it will just happen with me on the right time – Till date nothing has happened

Self is the only way to God and thinking about spiritual progress always is the right step – With this I have really made some quick progress :m:

    This made me smile.

Unfortunately there is indeed an awful lot of assuming to get rid of in order to be sufficiently confused. To be completely confused it is more effective to do it yourself.

And amongst the persons/entities one could possibly murder, what would be the worst (don't forget the environment that the BG was spoken in, and also what Krishna was advocating ......)

"What's the worst thing one can do to hamper one's spiritual advancement?"
Trying to do what others say one should, instead of finding out for oneself.

I have read that wearing a one face Rudraksh can take away the bad effects of such a sin, but surely not your jail terms

And if we reject what others say, wouldn't that make us guilty of trying to do what you say?

Just a few questions to begin with, so that I better understand what is being discussed:

    Define "spirit".
    Prove that one has "spirit".
    Define "advancement".
Prove that the "spirit" needs "advancing" (in accordance with your definitions of "spirit" and "advancement").
    Who determines what is "advancement"?
    Define "hamper".
Prove that this "advancement" can be "hampered" (in line with your definitions of the two words).
    Define "worst".
On whose scale is this "worst" to be judged - that of a "spiritual" person or that of a non-"spiritual" person?

I'll undoubtedly have more questions depending on your answers, but these initial ones will help.
    Thanks.

    Well Sarkus,
You're absolutely right of course. And this is the problem I always have with discussions involving concepts (and many other terms). I have tried, often, to define many of these, and often fail. And to make matters worse, even if I could define them, most people would disagree with my definition. So ........ and here's the REAL question for me - Is this a short coming of language? Or do we live by concepts and ideas, the meanings of which, we only vaguely understand?
