I am comparing the level of hate many people have for fat people to the level of hate many people had of black people in the 1950's

Obesity is correlated strongly to poverty, ethnicity, genetics, and health conditions.
I don't think most obese people are upset about it, but I do think many may be embarassed of it.

LOL- my P.E. teacher was like 100 pounds overweight and not sedentary. How many fat waitresses have you met? How about fat construction workers? These aren't sedanetary jobs. Unless you are so obese that they cannot walk well or something (which is very rare) then active jobs are a possibility. Also, did you know that there isn't a strong correlation between how much a person eats and how much they weigh? There are obese people who eat the same foods and the same amount of foods as a normal weight individual. If I don't watch my diet and do at least an hour of cardio a day I gain weight in leaps and bounds.

I have a nonfunctional thyroid, it caused me to be obese and depressed when I was younger. Couldn't exercise vigerously because my body couldn't handle it. I'd eat a 1200 calorie a day diet and wouldn't loose weight. As soon as I went on medicine- boom, I lost like 10 pounds a month until I got down to a healthy weight. Seriously, all is not what meets the eye. I was treated horribly during that time, in a way I would not wish upon my worst enemy- it was not fair, even if I had done that on purpose it wouldn't have been fair.

I agree that parents, along with schools and other social institutions, are largely responsible for childhood obesity. This is part of why it gets me so angry when people make fun of fat people- because kids hear this and take it onto the playground. A 8 year old who is morbidly obese did not make themselves morbidly obese- the adults in their lives did.

When I was pregnant I developed a very mild case of gestinational diabetes.
I actually stopped drinking any kind of juice and it was fine. Before and After I was
pregnant I never had a problem with it in my life, just when i was pregnant.

Anyhow they told me to visit a dietian.....at the hospital. Well when i got in the room
she could barely fit in the chair. She was not chubby she was probably about 100 lbs or more overweight. I just kept thinking while she was talking, how can you tell me what I should be eating??? I couldn't understand how somebody like that was in the position to educate others about their eating habbits.

what part of obesity has anything to do with poverty and ethnicity?. there are more fat people in middle class america than anywhere else in the world person for person.

if your poor shouldent that mean you have less money to spend on shit loads of food to stuff down your throat?. look at the people of africa who live in tribes, they are skinny little things and very poor. howcomes they are not all fat then? you hardly ever see a fat obese african tribe member. infact i dont think i have ever seen one.

and i have heard people say before "but poor people cant afford healthy food" wich is BS, because veg, grains, water and pasta etc are cheap. anywhere you go int he world grains ae dirt cheap. in the UK, america, or anywhere in asia.

the longer fat people make excuses for themselves the longer they will stay fat, i have trained hundreds of obese people and got them all to shift the pounds.

peace.

Heh. I love this comment.

Since when is high school fair? Grow up and get over it, most of us were teased to some extent.

Frankly, I think it's in really poor taste for you to compare the sentiment against being overweight to the institutionalized and vicious racism of the American past. I don't recall fat people ever being killed for being fat.

people of colour?, what does that mean?. people who have a tan? people who are white? black people?, hispanic? chinese?

everybody but the translucent people of the andromeda system?

you dont need a gym membership to go running, you dont need a gym membership to do push ups, sit ups, squats, pull ups, crunches. and since when are grains and veg expensive?

just because you were fat dont make excuses for lack of self control and lazyness.

peace.

How does the idea that there in a skinny gene validate the idea that all fat people are genetically disabled? even if that was the case, how could you say that the gene makes it harder to surpress hunger? Wasn't the article about a woman who could eat non-stop without gaining weight(therefore she had more hunger WITH your skinny gene)?
No.

Is weaker the right word? In my experience, it's usually the skinnier people who get picked on due to that stereotype.
.
OMGWTF, no it is not. Virtually any fat person can run or jump rope to lose weight if they want. What black person can jumprope to lose melinin? Why would they even, you can't die FROM being black. You can die from being fat, that's why people don't like fat people, they're a bad example to kids.
That's true, just not what you said before that. However, I've noticed that making fun of fat people can cause them to lose weight on occassion.

people of color refers to people who are not of european decent, yes. In my culture, at least, it is generally considered a more respectful term than the term minorities when you are speaking about blacks, latinos, and people of asian decent. It may be a culture term however.

I can buy a loaf of white bread (ie: refined as crap) for $0.50 cents whereas a loaf of whole wheat bread costs$3.00 dollars. Lettuce generally costs $3.00 dollars a head whereas ramen costs$0.25. An apple can cost as much as $1.00 when it is out of season. My fresh and frozen produce budget for a week is approximately$15-$40, which is a lot of money compared to bolognia and cheese sandwhiches on white bread, or a can of high fat ravioli, or some macroni and cheese. I can get a cheese burger from McD's for$0.64 but a salad would cost me $5.00. It may be different where you live, but this is how it is here. Please start using some scientific basis for your arguements, as this is a SCIENCE forum. I proved that poverty and obesity are related in post-industrialised nations, yet you have yet to prove to me that lack of self control is related to obesity. I used the fact that I "was fat" to demonstrate that you cannot judge individuals based on their weight. I have a disease, it was treated, now I am normal weight. I am not arguing that obese people are generally responsible for their own health and wellbeing, I am arguing that holding a hateful opinion of fat people is wrong. I am also arguing that society has a responsibility to help those who want help, including obese people. 13. ### ExploradoraRegistered Senior Member Messages: 264 I was not strictly talking about high school, but anyway. Actually I liked high school- I was bullied in grade and middle school. You missed the entire point of my comment, and I really don't feel like explaining it again. I explained it once already. 14. ### EmptyForceOfChiBannedBanned Messages: 10,848 i think thats offensive personaly, alot of black people see that as racist. they dont like being called "coloured" usualy. whats wrong with calling african people african? or hispanic people hispanic? why is a tanned white person not called a "person of colour" when they are darker than some african/indian people. so is rice and pasta so expensive then?, or what about flour and basic cooking ingrediants?. are you telling me that if i google searh prices in your area. i cant somehow find a healthy balenced diet on a low budget if i tried my hardest? scientific? you mean like the countless obese people that i have trained as a PT and got them into shape. with little more than working out and cutting back on the intake of fatty and high sugar foods?. cut out carbs, intake a low amount of sat fats, up your protein intake, go running and stop being lazy. i could sit here all day and post countless reports on how to burn fat and workout without spending a penny. you dont need to spend a single cent to workout. you can do it all with your own bodyweight in a park. you dont have to hate somebody to not respect the life they live. i dont hate anybody actualy. but i have the right to tell people they dont have to be fat. and as a PT i think im perfectly qualified to tell people to get off their fat ass ant go for a jogg and cut back on the fatty foods. i dont care where in the world you come from, you can improve your diet if you try. tribal groups in africa manage to stay trim and healthy and they dont even have money. so you cant tell me that people in developed countries, who have some money cant do it. there is no excuse for being obese apart from the fact that you dont workout, and you stuff your face with fatty foods. you are just using a tired excuse that people cant afford to be in shape. and thats bullshit. peace. 15. ### ExploradoraRegistered Senior Member Messages: 264 Google the term people of color before judging it or becoming offended. It's a postive term used to identify those people who are not of european ancestory. People of color is a completely different term than "colored people", which was created by white people to, generally, refer to african american people- they had "colored" bathrooms and "colored" entrances. People of color is a completely different term with a completely different history. 16. ### EmptyForceOfChiBannedBanned Messages: 10,848 well sorry but a "person of colour" just told me it offended them. its not up to me what "people of colour" find offensive. and to be honest, i wouldent like to be called "a person of colour" either. and i doubt my daughter would like it. what do you class my daughter as then?. she is 1/4 russian, 1/4 southern european, and 1/2 saint lucian. is she a person of colour? or is she european? peace. 17. ### nietzschefanThread KillerValued Senior Member Messages: 7,721 No that's just goofy. Give any five year old a box of crayons and tell them to "color" in the outlined faces of Al Sharpton to Uma Thurman and you will find we are all only so many shades of brown. 18. ### XevRegistered Senior Member Messages: 10,943 Last I checked, lentils and pasta were cheap around 1$ a bag. A can of diced tomatos costs about 80 cents. Add a vitamin pill and you've got a filling and perfectly nutritious meal for less than 2$. Canned tuna is about 75cents a can. A cucumber is about 50cents when in season. Whole wheat bread about 2$ a loaf. You have three meals a day for about 3 dollars.

Rice is about 3 dollars for a five pound bag, and that's the whole grain shit. Soy sauce is around 2\$ a bottle. Carrots are about 3 dollars a bag. Regular chicken (not free range) is about 4 dollars a package. I can make about 7 meals out of all that.

Jesus, this is how I afforded school for a while. And I was thin back then - suprisingly enough, because I wasn't eating much.

Hah! I love how you try to sound smug and superior and just fail so hard.
He doesn't need to trot out a single solitary statistic, because it's just this easy:

The increase in the internal energy of a thermodynamic system is equal to the amount of heat energy added to the system minus the work done by the system on the surroundings.

In other words, you physically cannot remain fat if you consume fewer calories than you use. I mean, it'd be cool if you could - we wouldn't have an energy crisis, we wouldn't be debating middle east policies, because energy would be totally free and never consumed.

But when EmptyforceofChi doesn't give "facts" and you trot out some theory that violates the laws of physics, I gotta go with him.

God, you people are dense.

Here's a list of organsiations or websites that use the term people of color

http://www.forpeopleofcolor.org/
http://www.wvcadv.org/people_of_color.htm
http://www.pocc.org/
http://www.nopcas.com/

Tell me that they are racist? You, however, want to attack me so you grab onto the first word that I say that "sounds" offensive.

It is a positive cultural term that does not exist within your culture, so you are offended. I did not come up with the term, but its use started in the 90's I believe, and I believe it was based on the free people of color . It's like telling someone who speaks spanish that they are racist when they use the word negro to refer to the color black.

I said google it- it is clear you did not.

you did not come up with the term, but you used it and i said it was offensive to some people. if a black person said that it is offensive and they dont like being called it. why am i not allowed to say it offends people?

you clearly are white, and do not find it offensive because your not being called it. if you find being called a cracker offensive are you not allowed to state that?

calling me dense because i stated that somebody told me its offensive is stupid. its not my fault that the term you used is offensive to people is it.

peace.

Where I live, I am affectionately termed a "honky".
