First we have El Nino, then we have La Nina, and now we have El nino Modoki - what next?

El nino is where the pool of warm water in the pacific is concentrated in the eastern pacific, around South America.
La nina is where the pool of warm water is more concentrated in the western pacific than normal.
And now we have El nino modoki, which is where the warm water is concentrated in the middle of the pacific.

Each of these have different effects on weather patterns, and there are still years where none of these happen.

El nino modoki means 'same but different', with the el nino modoki's effects being a hybrid.

Apparently this year was supposed to be an elnino modoki, but el nino won out.
