Photo taken during a stay in Joao Pessoa in The state of Paraiba Brazil.
Conditions are very hot and humid - tropical.
Description includes a tree standing about 20 - 30 metres that during it´s flowering season has a large show of suspended spherical shaped pods. The flowers are large and orchid or waxy in style.

I have no idea how to find out it´s details and would appreciate any help offered. A very interesting plant I think.

Some one has suggested it may be a bread fruit variety...but this is inconclusive...

maybe just to help a little , if we ignore the fruit and the flowers we would see a typical tree not unlike an elm or an oak. The is one of several growing along a street and bordering an arid park in the middle of a suburb of Joao Pessoa.

Because of language difficulties it is virtually impossible to ask for local help via council or othet gov. agencies. I might be able to approach the zoo-ological facilties but language problems would prove very frustrating and time consuming I think.

Ok, I have managed to contact th eperson who should kno what the tree is called.
He states that the tree is unknown and uncatergorised.

I said, but it's in the middle of a capital city??

He says, there has been no process started to identify the tree, that in fact it i sactually waiting to be discovered by the scintific community.

He has a large amount of knowledge about local trees as he has worked for the local governement agency responsible for their protection.

So our tree awaits someone who wants to put a name to it.....ha...incredible...nows your chance for a bit of immortality....ha

I was a bit surprised to find it, especially after someone who deals with the trees there has no clue

I put 'identify trees' into google and got a few sites that let you pick options until you found a tree, but that didn't work.

Then I tried 'brazilian trees'. Clicked one of the first results, went into 'flowering trees' and found it.

It is amazing given the statement by my contact that the tree had no name. I have no idea why the confusion, either the translation process was wrong [ most likely ] or we were talking at cross purposes. [ less likely ] or it was an ego issue......hmmmm....

Interesting. Are you going to call him on it?

How do you deal with the language there?
Do you use a phrase book?

I think he has enough problem dealing with his mis-truths if that is the case, so no, I would not call him on it.
I used an interpretor of dubious quality so I can not be too critical. Also I tend not to find much value in bursting the bubble of someonelses ego delusions.
Personally I think it was a genuine mistake as he had no motivation to say one way or the other except his embarrassment at not having access to the knowledge I requested, therefore taking the easier way out by fudging.

Possibly in the interpretation it was failed to be clarified that he was simply saying that he pesonally had no reference and not a global statement, which come to think of it was most likely. the linguistic fickleness being the main cause. Portuguese to English and vica vesa is not word for word nor is it even concept to concept in many cases. In some cases there is significant syntax errors mainly because the object in discussion is being approached from very different linguistic perspectives and rationals or so it seems.

Even using a phrase book is fraught with problems. Most of the time I restrict my convo' to greetings and other niceties and otherwise generally keep silent.
Then again I am not a student of Portuguese but am learning slowly.

    ohh well ...another lesson learned!
