That's a good point. It's arbitrary. Therefore we, as a society, will have to form a consensus in order to take action and together debate what is a "disability"

After we reach a conclusion we can take action, if action is desired. As a species, it would be in our best interest (in my perspective) to promote health and ability and ultimately "perfect" the human body.

Well, if that's your objective, it would seem that you were on a better track with your "Thoughts about organic life" thread.

Even if it is a bit Utopian of a concept...

Ultimately with technology we will be able to eliminate death, disease, and disability as well as weakness (mental and physical)

    There you go...

Just be careful expressing your opinions when they contain comparatives. Otherwise, your stuck in that same trap, there is always stronger compared to weaker, disability is relevant and disease is sometimes arbitrary.

Elimination of death seems safe, death is pretty much an absolute...

about a month ago I watched a program on HDNET on just this problem about mentally retarded in India

and the approach was to force these people into being independent , grow their own food , which of course forces them to think and increased their self-esteem

it was a very interesting approach and I liked it really

it was healing the mind so to speak

I completely understand where you are coming from; but you have to wonder, if we don't do it eventually, how will we ever make true progress? How will we eliminate disability and disease?

I feel that there will be things civilization will have to do, even "bad" things, if we ever want to make "progress"

Eliminating the mentally disabled won't prevent other people from being born mentally disabled. So what difference does it make? If their family is taking care of them... I guess I don't see you're point of view.

True, but it would eliminate the burden of having to care for them. Not that I don't want to see them be as comfortable and happy as possible, because I do, but in the end it will not matter so the best good that can come is to not waste the resources in the first place

Using my standards of judging mental disability it is clear that you suffer from a very serious one that renders you subhuman, a burden on society and an obstacle on our route to perfection. Please explain why you should not be eliminated.

See? Just like Norsefire, you understand the basic principles involved. I think most people understand, but they're too mamby-pamby, idealistic liberal to admit it. And it bodes ill for human society.

And what happens to them when you're no longer able to care for them? Who takes care of them? Where does the money come from to care for them?

And what if they have children? ...who cares for your boys AND their children when you're unable or dead?

they will be able to take care of themselves, they get money to live, yes ok from the goverment but that is what that money is there for, and if they have children, (if that is what they want) then they will be able to look after them themselves, they have OCD, tourettes, Bi polar and my youngest has Autism and severe ADHD they should not be killed because society wont accept them, thats the fault of society and not my childrens

why does is render you subhuman?

you name me one person who is perfect in every way (dont say mary poppins) lol everyone has a certain disadvantage, shouldn't society be more accepting in disabilities?

    What??!!

Norsefire is taking a position in which he
    a) defines what is desirable in human characteristics
    b) unilaterally decides that individuals who fail to reach his standard are a drain on society, better of dead, etc
    c) argues that we should seek to eliminate such people from society,

I find this attitude abhorrent. I am mocking Norsefire by duplicating his actions and showing that when I do so he is the one who should be eliminated. Excuse me if that was too subtle for you.

Ophiolite both your point and mine are irrelevant; you do bring up a good point though, which is that these kinds of things are arbitrary.

Therefore society as a whole will determine what "fit" is. And quite usually mental deficiency in the extreme sense that we're discussing is considered unfit. Although sad, it is for the "greater good" that we proceed to mold society into our own view of perfection.

But you're always talking about people being free and no one forcing them to do anything (like pay taxes). If someone wants to dedicate their own life, time and resources to taking care of someone else be it small child, the mentally disabled, the physically disabled, the elderly, the sick...etc. Then how is a burden on anyone but themselves (not to mention a self inflicted burden)? Many who do it don't even see it as a burden. Society shouldn't poke it's nose into something that doesn't concern it, right?

Case in point: Lucifer's Angel sees it as a privilege to care for his 'disadvantaged' children. One might well observe that with such a loving parent his children are less disadvantaged than genuises brought up in the absence of love.

One can't help wondering if that is Norsefire's problem. (For he evidently has one.) Maybe instead of condemning him for his lack of humanity, I should be pitying him the upbringing that rendered him so.
