For me, I have bookmarked about four or five physics forums. One I go to if I have a technical question that I need answered---there are experts there that know much more than I do about the physics that I am interested in. One I go to just for laughs, because I think crackpots own/run it. Sci won out because I feel some personality here. It's a bit indescribable, but I think that the owners of this board have carved out a bit of a niche. I am curious though---there are quite a few people who make a big scene about leaving, and then don't (Reiku, sisypus, shorty...). Is this a common phenomenon?
What do you mean by "the competition pales"? That in time, one becomes more skilled, more able to win in debate against people, and thus loses interest in debate?
Its a form of protest against something the member feels is going wrong with the site. There isnt any point just leaving unless your prominate enough that your presents will be missed like one of the mods, or one of the other really well known members (sandy or maybe mad for example) The decision to actually leave then comes latter and depends on a subconsious judgment between how much whatever the issue you were pissed off to start with is irritating you on one hand and how much you gain from paticipating on the other This is EXACTLY the same behaviour we exibit in our sexual and other relationships where we firstly make the other party aware that something is making us unhappy in some way and then we decide the worth of the relationship vs what is pissing us off
