What happens to the human body in a vacuum?

    so basically the amount of time one can spend in a vacuum depends on the amount of oxygen in the blood..

    isn't there an arthur c clarke book in which a spaceship crew has to transfer to another ship through the vacuum of space? they hyperventilate for a couple of minutes to make it. i think the book is part of the space trilogy, but i'm not sure..
